Anyone tried the 'new' wolf ammo in a ar15 yet?

my dad and i shot a bunch of silver bear .223 62 gr JHP through his M-4 (yes, a REAL M-4; but no not FA or burst) and it functioned flawlessly. however, the burnt powder gave off a horribly irritating odor and fumes. the gas made my eyes burn after about 10 rds of rapid fire, and i needed to take the rifle out of my shoulder to let my eyes clear. but the stuff fucntioned fine and was pretty accurate.

I've fired about 200 rounds of it out of my Bushmaster 16". I was using USGI mags with green followers (and this rifle has never malf'ed using XM193 or Q3131A ammo in about 2000 rds).

I got about 4-5 malfunctions shooting it. Every time it short-stroked the bolt, ejecting the spent case but failing to strip the next round from the mag, with the bolt coming to rest about halfway forward. I could rack the charging handle with a little effort and it would load the next round just fine. The loads seemed really incosistant - some were resulting in huge muzzle flashes with sparks going everywhere, and a few were resulting in no muzzle flash at all (not suprisingly, every time there was no muzzle flash the bolt short-stroked).

I was just shooting cans, so no idea on the group sizes - it was still minute of can accurate.

It still stinks like Wolf used to, but it doesn't seem to gum up the barrel. When I cleaned the rifle afterwards there was no sign of any lacquer and it cleaned up as easily as it has in the past with other ammo.

Thanks for the input KW. AR15.com had mentioned a defective lot of the new stuff out there.. inconsistant velocities, and it was all coming in 2-300 fps below spec. Do you happen to have a lot number for what you shot?

As soon as the next gun show comes around (any Marylanders know when the next one is?) I'm going to pick up 500 rounds to try out in my Bushy.

Even if it does have a couple FTF's it's not really all that big of a deal to me. As long as it doesn't FTF every other round. I just need to find a cheaper plinking ammo.

I'm not sure which lot it was, but I'd bet that what it was. For plinking ammo, I'd say the stuff is just fine.

I haven't tried the "NEW" Wolf, but I've shot a ton of the "old" Wolf through my Colt SP-1 and Bushmaster Dissapator with excellent results. No problems with the old stuff.

And BTW, the "melting lacquer" problen is an urban legend." Think about it! If the lacquer melted, wouldn't it gum up FULLY AUTOMATIC *AK74* rifles? That little 5.45X39 chamber wouldn't work very well if it was full of melted lacquer. Ditto the new AN-94!

I seldom believe the comments like "My wifes nephew lives next door to a green beret, and he said that..."

*crosses his fingers*

It'd be nice if it works out. Much rather have an ar15 plinker alongside my fal, than a sar.
