Ok easy question. Do you use Wolf ammo in your AR15? I don't care what other ammo you may use just curious about how well wolf ammo works with your AR. Also Brand of rifle you're shooting it through. I know there is a thread on this over at AR15.com but I think there are more participants here at THR. Thanks Tim

I've done it...maybe 50 rounds, but generally, no.

I'd consider they're new non lacquer stuff, if I were that hard up.

Bushie Dissipator, fwiw.

WOLF Ammo

Actually I have the same question regarding Wolf Ammo as I am wondering if the steel case (as opposed to brass case) will damage my AR15 in any way?

I don't reload and expect to do a lot of shooting this spring with the AR.........and I like the price of WOLF ammo. Don't want to damage the gun though.

I believe 444 has used a lot of Wolf in his.

I don't know why they can't make an extractor assembly on an American gun that can handle steel cased ammo, with it being so cheap and plentiful these days. The Russians do it all the time.

As for the laquer buildup....can't say, really. You do'nt want stuff gumming up the bolt area of your rifle, and the the tighter the AR-15 is, the more of a problem this is going to cause.

Well I've used some of it in my Bushmaster. The batch I got was very inconsistant. Some rounds seemed to be loaded very hot, and others so weak that they short stroked the bolt. I think 3 or 4 out of about 200 rounds fell into this latter catagory. Otherwise I had no malfunctions with it. This was the newer kind without the lacquer and it didn't seem to leave anymore of a mess then any other ammo. It still stinks like it always did. If you're just looking for cheap ammo to plink with it'll work just fine. I personally prefer to pay a little more for milspec, but if I was going out shooting and all I could find was Wolf I'd shoot it rather then leave my AR at home.

Good cheap ammo. More practice.

It's not that AR extractors can't 'handle' it; its just that being a harder metal, the steel will wear them out faster than traditional brass. That holds true for all extractors for all guns.

I've used cases of it through my AR's without any problems. I'll handload when I want accuracy, but for general plinking ammo, it can't be beat. Steel cases also make for easy cleanup with a magnet-on-a-stick.

I have to agree with artherd. Now if you are talking about 7.62x39 it is a totally different story with American made brass cased ammo costing five times as much. But with the 5.56 I can get Winchester Q3131A for just slightly more than Wolf or Silver Bear and the AR was not designed for steel cased ammo.

I've used 500 or so rounds of the 62 grain stuff. Seemed to run fine through my CAR-style. That was after having some torn case problems with some gunshow "Israeli" stuff packed loose in an ammo can.

1000 rnds Q3131A: $200
1000 rnds Wolf 55gr: $130

$70 is a big difference!

Buy a case of Wolf and put $70 in your sock drawer towards Q3131A!

After three cases of practice with Wolf, you can buy Q3131A!

I've got 500 rounds of the laquer coated 62g put up for emergency use, most likely won't ever shoot it. Tried about 25 in my Colt SP2, worked fine. I reload so I have no need to shoot it. If I have to drag that out then I won't be worried about the wear on my gun.

The wolf ammo I had wouldn't work worth a crap in my Bushy/RRA combo, my Bushy DPMS combo, and now my Oly Arms M4gery. In addition to getting cases stuck in the chamber, you get wildly inconsistant velocity and accuracy. With an SD of nearly 200fps, I shudder to think about how variable the rest of the operations are. In a sound gun with chrome bore, chrome chamber, and well-maintained I'm sure you could shoot cases of it. My experience is anecdotal with three AR's, and my mini-14 and the G36C I shot some out of ate the stuff up.

Yes, I did chrony a bunch of rounds and ended up with an SD of 193fps. That means that one shot may go 2900fps while the next would be 2707 fps. That's with the 62gr stuff.

CRAP, CRAP, CRAP.

Wolf

Just got a new Bushy for Christmas and Wolf is the only stuff I have put through it so far. About 400 rounds. Shoots fine and is pretty accurate.

Have used the same stuff in my mini-30 for several years and have never had a problem.

YMMV.

I think it depends entirely on your rifle. Some have had great success.
Mine puke on it. I spend more time hammering out stuck cases than I do shooting.

Ran 2K rounds of Barnaul through my Colt several years ago, ok ammo. About 1 in 300 misfire. No other malfunctions, misfire easy to clear. Intentionally ran about 1400 rounds over several months without cleaning to see when it would choke on the laquer. Long time, but when it did, it was a pretty creative jam. One you won't clear without tools. Incidentally it was on one of the misfire rounds. Also incidentally the round fired on the second primer strike. I know because I said "how sure am I that the thing is fired?" Not very so I split the lowers, re-cocked the hammer, re-assembled and fired into dirty clothes basket, which very pleasantly cleared the jam. If not for the misfire I don't think it woulda choked. Could not manually extract, even holding charging handle and beating butt on the ground.

and who does your laundry? You aren't married I assume?:uhoh:

I agree with you on price.

Having said that I've only shot wolf ammo through the AK never the AR. But after seeing the price difference I have thought 'bout using Wolff ammo all the way around. I'm just not convinced that I won't regret it.

Works for me..

1500 rounds of Barnaul (steel-cased, Russian, but not Wolf, same price though) through my Bushmaster. NO malfunctions of any kind.

Alexander Arms has a rep who shows up at our range now and then to test-fire their 5.45x39 AR-15's. Guess what brand of ammo they use?

I think that the big problem with the Wolf ammo is inconsistent QC by Wolf, rather than any problems inherent to the steel case.

Also, some AR-15's have very tight chambers which probably contribute to some of the problems.

Buy 100 rounds, try it, (take a range rod and stuck case extractor to the range) if you like it great, if it sticks, don't use it again.

I've fired about 800 rds of the 62 Garin Wolf 5.56 through Eagle Arms M15A2. Never had a problem with and it shoots well.

I'm sitting next to a case of it. I've shot around 60 rounds so far, no problems yet. I might use this case up then go on to something else, or just store this case for a rainy day and go ahead and get a new case of something a bit better. Hmmm...

I figured it out once and decided that after 10,000 rounds, the savings in Wolf Ammo over something of good quality like XM193 would be enough to buy a whole new Rifle.
