I just bought a Taurus 92 AF (used) as a handgun for use during muzzleload hunts and for HD. Where I live, we're allowed to carry a handgun for personal protection (from cougars and bears) during muzzleoad hunts--for obvious reasons. I was just wondering if any of you folks have had experience with this gun during a hunt or have used it for large game? I guess in a broader sense the question could be, has anyone used 9 mm handguns for hunting large game and how effective is it?

Please understand I'm a newbie with handguns so if this is a stupid question go easy OK :)

world record

back in the 1980's the two co- holders of the world record black bear by Boone and Crockett standards, was shot with a Ruger single six. FACT.

Ulysses killed a wild boar with a sharp stick. does'nt mean i would. more importantly, hunting a bear and killing an attacking bear are different tasks.

The 9mm would be fine for any two-legged predators you might encounter, but it sure wouldn't be my first choice for protection against a bear -- especially not a brown bear. The only semi-auto I'd consider for that role is a Glock 20 loaded with full house 10mm.

Agree

Hey there:
If the need came up in the woods and I had to defend myself from a large cat or any bear with a 9mm . I would probably shoot and run like *&%*.
That 9mm would like get you more hurt then help.
Min. gun for protection in what you described would be .357 mag. or larger.
Even my normal carry gun may not be much help if the bear was a big one, >45 acp. Might just piss him off.

I suspected as much after looking at the 9mm round...hehehe...gives me another reason to go get another gun. :) Now I've got the...er...excuse the pun...ammo to go tell my wife, "But Honey, I'll NEED a bigger gun for muzzie hunting!" :D

Handgun Hunting

I don't hunt so this is all speculation, but if I were hunting big game like grizz I would want something that really penetrates. I have several 9mm pistols and a couple .45 ACP but I think I would want a .44 magnum with hot loads.

There Ya go.

Hey There : Surely she would not want you to get mauled by a mean ol bear.
Better go get another gun. :)
Have fun and good hunting.
