there are a number of different cartridges based on the .223 case you could consider that use the same mags, same bolt.. some are 6mm, some 6.5mm as well that are essentially necked-up .223s

AR cartridges are showing more popularity. 300 BO and 6.8 SPC has already shown up on Walmart's shelves. Both plus 6.5 Grendel are regulars at Academy.True...the idea isn't new at all. The success of this has brought it way into the forefront though. You can even buy .300 blackout ammo at places like academy now. I bet Walmart will have it within the next few years. You can buy subsonic ammo in some stores...right off the shelf. Load data is everywhere you look. There's milsurp pulled bullets around if you can find them. You can get barrels from tons of different companies. It's just easy and that makes fence sitters like me want to take the plunge.
Anyway, yes, I'm building an AR pattern rifle in 300blk. Reasons are several. I'm looking for something different than the normal .223/5.56. However, I like that it's only a barrel change, essentially. Meaning, if I decide to switch back to the normal AR cartridge, I'll just need to put a barrel on and I'll be gtg. Also, I like that 300 is a reloaders cartridge. I will be forming my own cases out of 223 brass from a friend. Other cartridges that I looked at things weren't that simple. The availability of spare 223 brass and 308 bullets is very appealing. I'm also a fan of heavy bullets moving kinda slow when it comes to the house and it's defense. I know I'll probably get slammed for this but the 300blk reminds me of a .45acp in a rifle cartridge. Meaning a big'ol bullet moving slowly but with enough snot to settle someone down pretty quickly. I like it. I am also looking to do a pig hunt sometime next year and this should be a great cartridge for that.
Again, in my state, suppressors and SBR's are out. Pistols are pretty impractical. I know that. I also know that the 300 is NOT the be all-end all cartridge. I know what it is and for the most part what it isn't. It's an oddball that I'm looking to take a chance on.

I've got the same barrel set up and I've shot everything from 110 to 220 out of mine with no issues. That includes both commercial and hand loaded ammo.I am shooting a carbine gas system 16" 1 in 8 barrel and it shoots 110 to 155 Gr bullets well. (I haven't tried anything heavier) That gives you fast light bullets that open up easily to a reasonably heavy bullet that will hold together for a variety of uses, and as oldpapps posted, the pulled or new 147 Gr FMJs are just plain fun for plinking.
Other than barrel choice, everything else is just what cosmetic options you like. And there are a ton of them.
It's a .223 case, cut off at the shoulder, re~formed, primed/powdered/topped with bullet of choice. Shorter than a 223 case.why the shorter bullets in 300 aac?.. wasnt it designed to use longer bullets without sacrificing powder capacity by the mouth of the case being further back? or is it really just a necked up 223?
