Anyone have experience hunting whitetail with .44 mag out of a rifle? It seems like a good round for a brush carbine.

Matching a little rifle with my Redhawk seems appealing. I'm comfortable with the Redhawk out to 30 yards or so. How far would you shoot a .44 carbine with iron sights like the Ruger or Marlin 1894 comfortably?

Yes, I've taken whitetail out to 100 yards or so with a Marlin 1894C in .44 Magnum, and could probably go out to 125-150 yards with no trouble at all, as soon as I'd practised enough to allow for the bullet drop. Out of a rifle, a .44 Magnum is like the Hammer Of Hell on a whitetail - in my own experience, and that of my huntin' buddies, they tend to drop immediately, or run only a very short distance, if properly hit. Very effective, at least as good as a .30-30 (although the latter has a flatter trajectory).

I do not know yet but I hope to after deer season! I am also going for an all .44 deer season. I will be carrying a Stainless blackhawk with a 4 3/4" barrel, and consistently ring an 8 inch gong at 50 yards with it's open sights. I will also be carrying a Winchester 94 Trapper (I love those short lever guns!) with a scope for any distance up to 125 yards. I actually came in from my reloading shop just a minute ago where I was loading up some 240 gr. JSP's for practice tomorrow.

Shot a big Blacktail from 35 yards or so with a Rem 788 .44 mag, but it was a set up and I used low perf/quiet load! The .44 mag is very powerful out of a rifle under 100 yards on deer, however. The 300 grain XTP bullet is good on big hogs also!:)

IVE SHOT ALOT OF DEER ALBEIT AXIS DEER INSTEAD OF WHITETAILS BUT THE 44 MAG IN CARBINE FORM IS JUST DEATH ON THEM I USE HORNADY XTP'S ALSO I ALSO USE THEM ON HOGS GOT BOTH THE WIN 94 TRAPPER AND RUGER CARBINE AND USED THEM BOTH OUT TO 100 YDS OR SO THEY WORK VERY WELL.

I am hoping to shoot a Whitetail this season with my Trapper in .44 Magnum! I shoot iron sights but am good out to 100 yards or so. I would prefer to stay within 60 yards, though. Most of the stands I am hunting are less than 100 yard shots so I am keeping it with me each trip out. I am shooting a 210gr. Gold Dot at about 2000fps. Here's a picture of it.
