Anything bad to say about the Taurus PT1911??

Jordan,
I too was recently about to buy the blued pt1911. Then I held the Springfield Loaded model. I bought the Springfield. The Taurus is o.k. but it is just o.k.

I view my firearms purchases as long term buys. So the difference was acceptable to me. With tax the price difference was about $200 and change. The SA Loaded also has a better finish and nights sights. The slide was also alot tighter. I am sure the Taurus is o.k. and lots of people have had good time with them, but I want no doubts when I spend my money on a gun.

IMHO $700 is at least $100 too much for the Taurus. My SA Loaded was around $800 + tax.

Enjoy whatever you get,

Bought a new blue Taurus 1911 on or about November 25th 2007. Shot half a box of ammo and one "extra" round when I put the safety on with the hammer back in condition one and just for drill tried the trigger with the safety fully on. At about three pounds the safety snapped down and the hammer fell firing the pistol. It went back to Taurus in Florida immediately and they say that they will have it for six weeks. I bought an RIA Tactical the day I shipped the Taurus and will dump the Taurus if it ever comes back. The RIA is nicer looking, fits together better, has a better trigger (series 70 not 80) and all in all is to my way of thinking a far better pistol and cost less too. I paid $579 for the Taurus and $459 for the RIA as I recall plus shipping etc. etc.

I handled a Pt1911 and I had only one real complaint. The sharp checkering all over the grip may be the "IN" thing but I think it seriously detracts from the feel of the weapon. It make the organic feel of the 1911 feel mechanical and unnatural. I personally like a checkered front and back with smooth grips or better yet a smooth front/back and checkered grips. Not both. A set of smooth grips would hook up the PT1911 nicely.

My firearm Bible "Gun Tests Magizine" reviewed the Taurus PT1911 recently and gave it a poor rating or the equivilent to a "do not buy" rating. If i were going to buy a 1911 and wished to stay under the $800 price range I would 90% most likely look to Springfield Armory.

I'm just curious, but what are the reasons?

Just a quick take on the PT1911.

If it was just touted as a nice entry level 1911..I wouldnt have such a beef with Taurus...but the guns Ive seen, carried and shot have all been very hit and miss.

They say they are all hand fitted? The barrel/frame/slide fit on the ones Ive seen have been from tight to loose, the one I shot was tight to begin with and shot loose after just 200 rnds. Thats piss poor!

The "glowing features" are done hap hazardly..the checkering is pressed into the frame instead of being machined. This isnt a huge deal to me..but Ive seen guns that it was so off center on the gun..that it was very very apparent.

The safeties are poorly fitted. Its a series 80 gun which means it can have alot of variance in the trigger pull weight.

If they would just say...look its a bargain 1911 with some nice doohickeys added for a reasonable price. I wouldnt have so many harsh things to say.

Like Ive said before....get a Spartan. 10 times the gun for the same money.

Shoot well.........

Hey PCR, any online dealers that sell the Spartan besides Gunbroker? I'm looking at getting one myself.

Thanks.

"Lol, maybe that is why you were able to get it so cheap, b/c I promise you, 700$ OTD is not the standard price on ANY Kimber or Sprinfield Loaded, especially in SS...."

The Kimber Custom II retails new just over $600. The Stainless version about $100 more. I'd rather have the Kimber Custom II than the Taurus for the miniscule difference in price.

I dont know...sorry. You can call STI and they would be more than happy to help you. I think they can sell directly to a local FFL, if you have one.
Just call them..............hell of a gun for the money!

Shoot well.

OTD for 700$ NIB ??? How about $550 maybe? PT is a nice one, not the best but a $1000 1911 sure is not twice as good as a PT. Those who knock the PT probably cannot admit that what they bought for double now looks like a rip off. People are funny that way.

Good pistol, but 700 is too much for used when you can get better pistol with that money.

Regarding the gun tests article. They knocked the PT1911 for two reasons. Front sight was not centered and factory mags caused ftf's. I think this was a bit rough but it could have been an early gun as the article was summer of last year. In any case the PT fron sight is dovetailed and screw locked so it's easy to center. Mags I haven't heard any recent problems with. mine work fine.

not trying to be a jerk but if your gonna buy a Taurus pray you never have to deal with the Customer Service Dept. Never handled one of there 1911's, never will. My 2 year old apparently knows as much about firearms as the people working at Taurus..."No Touch"

So what are you getting if you spend more for something OTHER than a PT1911? Better accuracy? Better reliability? Better warranty? Better aesthetics? Why do those who denigrate the PT1911 feel that the gun of their choice is so much better? Give me cold hard facts and figures- not opinions.
