Hey-

I've been doing some research and shopping for an aperture setup for my 597. I know it's not the most accurate gun in the world, but I need to practice with aperture sights to get my front sight focus better w/o chewing up a ton of 7.5 Swiss ammo in my target rifle. So far, my rear sight options look good (Williams 5D or FP, probably the FP with target knobs, that is meant for a dovetailed receiver, and a low line of sight).

However, I am not sure what to do about a front sight. I bought this particular gun used, and someone had removed the irons and installed plug screws in the barrel.

My questions are:

1) Will the Williams "low line of sight" model work well, and do I need the adjustability of target knobs and the micrometer adjustments for practice?

2) Williams makes screw-on front sights and bases w/ dovetails. Anyone know where I should start for height? How can I tell if they will fit my barrel (mine has a std. barrel, not the heavy)?

3) Does anyone have another setup already worked out that does not require gunsmithing?

Thanks in advance for the help, and <whew> what a first post!

Rick, you may find more info over at rimfirecentral.com. There's a whole world of rimfire guys over there that tinker with their 597's in the Remington section...
