Busy at school writing a paper, and several search engines are turning up squat. What I need to find is approximately the number of people in Oklahoma that have CHLs... going for a "X in every Y people lawfully carries a concealed gun in Oklahoma every day" sort of thing.

Thanks in advance... :)

(Sorry it's so short, but the prof's about to come 'round again! :p )

The firm # I have is for NJ, which is a "we can but won't issue" state.

In 2001, there were 600ish CCW holders, mostly work only restricted permits, and
1500ish retired LEO permits, out of an approximate gunowner base of 1.3 million, in a population o 8.2 million.

The numbers I've heard with respect to normal "shall issue" states is that about 2% of the overall population have carry permits, but I have no basis to trust that figure. In some places in PA, I've heard that permit rates go as high as 15% (!!!!), but again, I have no basis to trust that figure either.

The example I use is that of a movie theater, which typically holds maybe 250 people. Assuming 1% permit rate you're sitting within easy spitting distance of about 2 armed civvies, munching their popcorn, watching the movie, and minding their own biz. Assuming 10 theaters per facility, that's about 20 folks in the building with guns on any given Saturday night.

Go figure.

as of when I got mine 6 yrs ago...

(22800 or so) in SC our permit number from what I was told indicates the number we were in issuance. that was in 98... I bet there is quite alot more now! 6 yrs is a long time! not counting the state constables and off duty LEO... There are alot of armed people around here. chances of being in the same building with a few armed people? PRETTY DARNED GOOD.

-Blood flows freely in the streets and there is utter chaos here. We are thinking of re-naming Columbia... "Dodge city"

Sorry, had to poke fun at the anti's and their arguements against CCW. Crime dropped her since we started getting ccw more widespread.

In Texas there were 240,816 licensees as of 5/7/04. That is roughly 1% of the population, though closer to 1.5% of the adult population. Keep in mind that the Texas CHL only started in its present "shall issue" form on 1/1/96. This number should grow, and it has grown by about 15,000 since approx. 22 months ago when I got mine.

I tried the same thing a while back and found that some states don't even know how many licenses are active. Look at www.packing.org and click onto the individual state web sites. Some are very thorough and others are not. Texas updates their's every month or two.

The best guesses have been about 3.5 million in the states that issue them and this was before the current crop of states passed ccw bills.

The states with comprehensive statistics give demographic details and the usual trend is Male (80%) anglo or hispanic 90+% predominantly 40 years old and older. In Texas we have 240,800 licensees out of about 20,000,000 known residents. It appears that seven or more out of ten adults are legally eligible for the licenses. It is unknown how many undocumented aliens are living in the state but the numbers are huge and growing. African American license holders are at about 5% - a number that has shown slow but steady growth.

Here in Florida, there are 330,000 people with CCW "permits".

Since Oklahoma regonizes Florida "permits", that is 330,000 potential people that are armed when they travel through Oklahoma.

IIRC, NC had ~56,000 as of 5/15/03. The SBI wepage where theyre listed (by number of applicants, permit holders, rejected and revoked, by county) isn't loading for me. I really cant even be sure on the year.

Mulder, is that figure for FL residents only, or does it have the non-res CWPs added in?

[edit] I found the NC stats I made in a post elsewhere. 55,812 permits issued, 364 revoked, 879 applicants denied, since the shall-issue law went into effect in December '95.

I've never seen that number before for NJ. SO in the whole state, if I'm not mistaken, the most densely populated state in the country, only 600 people have permits?

Now that makes me sick.
