April Houston gun show 22LR prices...

I still don't understand the appeal of .22... at least not at those prices.

And I've seen the 500/555 round boxes prices at $155 locally (of course the shelf was fully stocked with them, so I guess I'm not the only one).

I was just thinking about the 6 bricks of 525 I have in my ammo can...hmmm...

Sheesh, I paid about $275 for a 5,000 round case of .22's not that long ago. Shoulda bought another 5 cases as an investment......

I think buyers have to fill out a special ID-10-T form to buy at those prices, don't they? For less than half of what those fools want for their crappy bulk 22LR, I can download my .222 anywhere from subsonic to 22WMR velocities. And I have plenty of components to do it. In fact, the postman dropped off another 1k-ea 50grain Dogtowns just this afternoon.

That's crazy! .22 lr DOES seem to be coming back in my area at least.

Just last Friday morning I stopped in at my local outfitters store to get some Hoppes gun grease. For the pure heck of it I browsed over to the ammo section and to my surprise......there on the floor was a big stack of Federal bulk packs (525 rounds). $30.00 per pack and I thought THAT was high! They had a strict limit of ONE brick per customer. Yes, I picked up my brick:)..........and it was kind of funny.......I think every person in that store on that day was walking around cradling their single bulk-pack in their arms.....the stuff WAS moving quickly although it was certainly not a "feeding frenzy" of any sort.

I went back the following day about two hours AFTER opening time just for kicks & giggles and would you believe.....they had another big stack on the floor!

Yes....I picked up another box (can you blame me?) So for $60 bucks I took home 1050 rounds of Federal .22 LR. last weekend.......and NO.....I'm not a "flipper"......I'm gonna shoot these rounds this summer.....All of them:D

The point is, I thought the price I paid was high until I saw the pics posted by the OP......now I feel better.....MUCH better.

So, why would .22 LR seem to be coming back in Ohio and not in Texas? Hmmmmm.

Fella's;

Then you've got my local varmint market. In the recent past it was not unusual to go through a brick of .22lr a day. Good fun in a high target enviroment. Due to the national insanity on .22, I expect the varmint in question is gonna continue to breed like flies, eat like pigs, and become a serious problem next year.

Why, I might even stoop so low as to sell my varmint-shootin' self on streetcorners!

I went to the Wannenmacher's last weekend. Anytime you have people (non-dealers) bringing in their own carts of ammo, or better yet, a single brick of .22lr, then you know you have a problem.

I honestly feel like the urge to capitalize on the current ammo market is more the driving force here than the people actually needing the money. So what if you sell 3 bricks of spare .22lr for 60 bucks each? You made 130 dollars, whoopee, gonna go retire now? Dealers I can understand, because they have much more product to sell and will therefore bring in much more profit, but the private sellers with one or two boxes of ammo? It's like they're just insulting you because it's the thing to do. Not that they shouldn't be allowed to charge whatever they want.

At the last Wannenmacher's show in November I bought 1,000 rounds of 9mm for 185 bucks. It almost made my head explode when I realized that .22lr is now almost twice that.

This thread has helped me price my stockpile of .22...........figure I'll ask $200 a brick so no one will buy it. Hope I don't have to pay capital gains taxes on the increased value.

7.62x54R surplus is at .22/round (Ammunition To Go), much cheaper than .22. "In stock" on "Gunbot".

The Russian rifles cost less than many .22s. Ok, it must be the recoil and noise/effective range.

7.62x39 is available for .31/round at Midway, this minute. "In stock" according to "Gunbot".

Went to a gun/knife show last Saturday in Virginia Beach. Didn't expect much in terms of price deals on anything related to guns or knives, based on the last few gun shows I've attended in the last couple decades and therefore wasn't disappointed.

I saw .22 LR going for anywhere from $70 to $100 a bulk box, depending on size of the box. The Remington 525 round, shown in the OP, was going for $100 a box.

I usually pace the entire show, taking notes, before I actually pick up anything. Georgia Arms was doing brisk business with decent prices on their ammo. And I overheard some yahoo (one of the $110/box yahoos) telling another guy why .22 ammo prices were so high: it was because "all the manufacturers aren't making any .22 ammo any more because they're putting all their production efforts into larger caliber ammunition in order to meet the demand..."

Horse pucky. With companies running at maximum capacity for each line of ammunition, stopping production on .22 doesn't further increase production elsewhere. The production lines are all set up for specific calibers, and unless raw material supply is an issue this makes no sense. A stupid attempt as justification, in my opinion.

Lucky me...I had a couple smaller bulk boxes to hold me for quite a while through this. AND, count me lucky Irish stars, went to Dick's after work yesterday morning just on the off chance that they might have some .22 in and what do I see but 525 round boxes of Remington .22 LR for $22 a box!

Bought my limit (one box), called a buddy at work who sent his wife over to buy a box while he took an early lunch to pick up a box. Meanwhile, I called the other 2 stores in the area, discovered another store had some in stock and just made it there in time to buy one of the last two on the shelf!

Now I've got FOUR boxes for less than the going rate at the gun show!

WOOHOO! What a birthday present for me!

And to think my wife was just pinging on me about needing to practice for a .22 rifle competition she wants to participate in for the Boy Scouts. (She's a scout leader and runs the BB/.22 range.)

Tomorrow I'll hit the range and sight in the new Savage Mark II-F I bought a few weeks ago...which she laid claim to when she saw it. ("COOL! Is that for me?" Proper answer: "Why, yes!") It's affectionately known as her "evil black bolt action .22 assault rifle".

:neener:

So keep your heads up, lords and ladies. With a little patience and perseverance you can still find 'em in the stores.

SIDE NOTE:

For what it's worth, I was at the gun show for most of the day, Saturday. I walked the floor a LOT, keeping an eye on what was and wasn't selling. .22 LR ammo was NOT selling. I took notes on what tables had it, along with their prices and how much they had, and kept checking up on them throughout the day. I don't recall a single box disappearing off the tables.

Texas is still very dry . HOpefully it will get better this month of May as these Antis from the NE seaboard shut their mouth and leave us all alone.
