First, I am completely sold on the 300 WSM cartridge. In the recent G&A magazine, they listed (news to me) that the AR platform is available in the 300 WSM cartridge. Anyone had any experience with the AR in that caliber? Can anyone recommend a manufacturer or a place I can get more info? I used my internet search engine and it resulted in only one true result.

I know dpms makes ar's chambered for many different rounds including .300 SAUM....no WSM though. The .300 WSM is a great round, I have an a-bolt chambered for it and I absolutely love it.

I don't get it. Why a magnum round AR? If a Mil Spec. 7.62 or a .308 Win won't take out the target, one needs a significantly larger and more potent round. For my part, it would not purchase a magnum AR-styled rifle. I had to make this very decision two weeks back when I looked into the DPMS. I selected the .308.

A 300 SAUM or 300 WSM will always push a bullet of a given weight faster than the 308 can. If you want range or kinetic energy instead of weight, that can be a compelling option.

Why the 300 WSM?

I sold myself on the 300 WSM round when I was preparing to by a new rifle several years ago & I compared the ballistics of the 308, 7mm-08, 30-06, 270, 7 mm, 300 Win Mag, and the 300 WSM. It had all of the best characteristics in a round that I was looking for.

As I posted in a previous thread ( http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=264739 ), I recently finished a custom Win 70 project that is a < 3/4" shooter. When I saw that the AR platform was offered in 300 WSM, I said, "I gotta have one of those !!" The 308 or 223 isn't near in comparison to the 300 WSM. If I can have the power & accuracy of a 300 WSM in a semi-auto, I wish to have it.

What manufacturer chambers the AR-10 in .300 WSM?

I know DPMS and Armalite chamber the .300 Rem SAUM. They supposedly chose it over the .300 WSM because of better case strength. As far as I know, the .300 WSM does slightly outperform the .300 SAUM, however.

I do like the .300 WSM (I have a Ruger M77 stainless in that cartridge as my elk/ Alaska gun) but I just wasn't aware that anyone chambered a AR-10 in .300 WSM.

I also have a DPMS AR-10 in .308 and love it. I just found a great deal on mags too, so now I'm set!

I think Jim Clark Sr. makes AR's in the WSM calibers. If I recall correctly I have seen his ad numerous times in gun magazines, usually a plain white ad with black lettering and the words "AR's in the WSM calibers" stands out to me.
