on of the main things is that on an m16 a3 it has a selector switch of full auto where the a4 had 3 round burst

When it comes to civilian AR-15s, terms like A3 and A4 are rather ambiguous. They have nothing to do with barrel length, configuration, etc...I see most manufacturers using them to refer to flattop or not...and not in a consistent manner. Heck, some manufactorers refer to their AR-15 offerings in completely unique terms.

So, how about just some pics of ARs instead? I don't have one of my LMT standard 16" rifle (they call it the Defender 2000) right now in it's current configuration (MOE handguards, Bushnell 3200 3-9x40 scope, Vickers Tactical two point, MOE grip)...

i was just refering to a2 and a4 because i wanted to see some full length handgaurds with sight post and your right with ar-15 the a3 and a4 are almost one in the same that's why i specified m16 to man's question

Let me ask again and remember the op says AR15 not M16. What is an A4? What are the differences between an A4 and an A3?

AR15-A2 has standard hand guards with a fixed carry handle upper receiver and the A2 rear sights.

AR15-A4 has either the standard hand guards or the 4-sided rail system with the flat top upper receiver.

A1 = original/first version; full-auto; original A1 sights

A2 = second gen version; three-round burst; different sights

A4 = current gen version; three-round burst, flat-top receiver with detachable A2 sight handle

the "A3" is just a misnomer name attached to your everyday flat-top receiver AR-15 with detachable A2 sights, etc.

There is no such thing as an M16A3. The A3 is a unique term used only in the civilian market to describe flat-top AR-15 rifles - especially AR-15 upper groups.

and now... my current AR:

100_0477.jpg

CMMG "A3"/flat-top middie upper with gov't-profile barrel and lower and M4-style buttstock with a BCM bolt carrier group to make it milspec. Also threw on a 5C2 phantom flash hider, Daniel Defense Omega Rail to give it an uninterrupted top rail, MI flip-up rear sights, and a EOtech 512. I'm gonna porbably replace the buttstock one day - probably with a nice LMT SOPMOD stock, or something by magpul.

No - The M16A3 is a very real animal. It is essentially an M16A2 with a full-auto A1 fire control group installed. Deployed in limited numbers, yes, but still very real. The confusion comes from commercial AR manufacturers using the -A3 term to denote a flattop AR, while the real M16A3 is configured with the standard A2 carry handle.

HTH,

vanfunk

vanfunk you are correct and i thought that was what i posted earlier how ever never the case....................ok just so stop the confusion LETS SEE ALL UR AR'S how about that

According to Army TM 9-1005-319-10 (see attached pic), which covers the M16A2, M16A3, M16A4, and M4 and M4A1, there most certainly is a M16A3. It's NSN is 1005-01-357-5112. If you'd like, i'll post the technical information for it out of the TM.

Vanfunk is exactly right about the M16A3, they are rare but certainly do exist mainly used by the Navy

chaser_2332, you said "on of the main things is that on an m16 a3 it has a selector switch of full auto where the a4 had 3 round burst". The M16A3 basically is an M16A2 that fires full auto instead of burst. The M16A3 definitely is not a flat top and it's too bad that commercial AR flat tops are referred to as A3. Some manufacturers like ArmaLite do use the correct term of A4.

I'd love to see a good picture of an M16A3 but never have.

quentin you are correct in what your saying, i was just referring to the function of the gun

+1 on that JDGray.

I would lay off the Kool-aid. Drink to much and you'll have to pee in the middle of the night. Around that house your bound to get eviscerated!

chaser_2332, my AR15A4 has the Daniel Defense Omega 12.0 rail system. It's a free floating rail, and it utilizes the delta ring that was already on the BCM 1/7 twist 20" upper. I'm quite happy with it. FYI: I live a little more than 5 miles from Daniel Defense. :D

So everyone notices the bayonets, eh? Yep, every rifle I own that was issued a bayonet has a bayonet. Please see my sig line...

I stand corrected about A3 then. Thanks.

And yes, I have the 9" DD Omega on mine posted above. It is most certainly lighter and nicer than my old YHM 2-pc. rail set. It's great. Well worth the money.
