I recently purchased a brand new AR-15 upper from a friend that is brand new because he scrapped his AR15 project and we do not know if it can shoot 5.56 is there anyway we can know if it is capable of doing so? Thanks in advance!
It might be chambered for many different cartridges. It should have a stamp, 5.56 somewhere on the barrel, do you see it anywhere? Guns chambered in 5.56 can safely shoot either 5.56 or .223 ammo. If it is chambered in .223, it may have problems with SOME 5.56 ammo.
The barrel should definitely have a stamp on it telling you what its chambered in. Look at the 12 o clock position in front of the front sight, that's where most ARs have the chamber stamp.
Most major ARs are chambered for 5.56. Some are chambered for 223. Even some Colts that say 223 on the lower are marked 556 on the barrel and are chambered for 5.56.
Some of course are actually chambered for 223 like some DPMSs etc.
