AR-15 or M1A

If you had a choice between a standard AR or a standard M1A what would be your choice ?

They're totally different rifles with totally different missions. I would pick the M1A over the AR, but think everyone should have both.

My M1A is probably my favorite rifle. That said, in the future you may get more use out of a AR-15. Ammunition prices are becoming a real consideration for weapon selection. Even reloading isn't the deal it used to be.

Well considering an M1A is substantially more than an AR 15, I'd rather have an M1A if I had to pick one.

Unfortunately, the price of .223 is catching up with .308, so there isn't too much of an argument for ammo prices anymore.

These rifles are less costly to maintain and feed.

I do have a choice and I own both M1A and AR15 rifles.

M1A, I'm just not much of an AR fan.
I've owned two AR's and , although they were ok rifles, I just couldn't warm up to them, so they got sold.

Go with the M14 platform 1st and pick up an AR when you get the chance or get the AR 1st followed by an M14... get both

I'm not quite sure why anyone asks the "which one of the two" question to a bunch of addicts...The answer is always "both."

I guess it depends on what you have in mind to use these tools for? If you just go plinking at the range, or shooting at paper targets, either will do... which one fits you best and which one do you like the feel of better?

If it is prairie dog shooting, well the AR would be the most likely choice.

Black bear hunting would point one towards the M1A.

If you are talking a $1200 AR vs. a $1200 M1A, I'd personally take the AR. More features for the money, IMO, and if you don't like 5.56mm, a 6.8mm AR will do most anything the M1A will.

I don't know about that... I sold off my last AR about 8 years ago and focused on the M14 platform.
Yes the M14 can be expensive, but is sure is rewarding

These two are my most cost effective M14 builds.

Just last month I decided I needed a COLT LE 6920 and found out ARs can be just as expensive a good M14 type rifle.
Ammo for the AR does not seem to be any cheaper that 7.62 NATO or .308 and ARs have more expensive toys and gadgets available.

I have about $1800 wrapped up in this AR and I'm still shopping for quality ammo...

AR's are typically cheaper to buy, especially if you build one as a kit. They are also cheaper to feed, easier to find accesories for, and mags are far cheaper. Also, IMO at least, its easier to shoot for long durations (range visits) with an AR, as its easier on the shoulder.

Of course all of this is opinionated.

What am I choosing? A gun for plinking on the range? A home defense rifle/carbine? My only long gun for the end of the world? A long gun for serious combat marksmanship training? A rifle for serious long-range shooting?

Depending on what the need is would go a long ways towards sorting out which weapon was the right fit for the mission.

I'm in my AR's half of what the M1A's cost to build. An un-scoped M1A, doing all your own work well tie up 2K real quick, assuming you do a NM build. You can build a very nice AR for 1K.

I have mine set-up so I can slide my left arm through the loop next to the rear sling swivel...Is that how ya do it?

I'm not sure how all these slings work.
