AR-15 or M1A

As much as I love M-1As (got 3 of 'em), the AR-15 is more inherently accurate due to it's construction and is easier to shoot well.

Good eye Andrewsky, it's on there upside down. I need a longer sling than I have to wrap around my elbow/wrist.
TexasRifleman, good link on the sling, thanks.

Pick your poison....I bought both and will grab the M1A if I ever had to for self-defense. IMHO...

M1A Advantages:
*Simple an tough - very reliable even when dirty
*reasonable accuracy for a battle rifle (~2-3 MOA for rack grade rifles)
*.308 has between 2x and 2.5x more energy than .223 depending on range
*excellent iron sights
*better long range capability

AR Advantages:
*cheaper ammo
*aftermarket options galore are available - better platform for optics.
*field versions are very accurate
*pistol grip (the pistol grip stocks for the M1A are too large and heavy for my taste)
*Tier 1 AR's (Colt, LMT, Noveske) are slightly cheaper than M1A's. There are other AR clones that are much less expensive to buy initially, but I would not put these in the same class if were talking about needing hard use military rifles.
*lighter and more handy - nice balance too.
*you can carry much more ammo w/o getting weighed down

The bottom line is that the M1A is a true main battle rifle whereas the AR is more of an assault rifle. You'll have to see which fits your needs best or just buy both since it's inevitable anyway!

^^^ what about an AR-10? Looks like they can be had for $900-1,400 on Gunbroker.

I would love to have one, but they are about $900-1,400 out of my price range at the moment.

I had a real nice AR-10A4 SPR, but sold it off to fund another M14 build.

I prefer the M14 when shooting 7.62 NATO and the AR when shooting 5.56 NATO.

For me it depends what you want it for.
If I want something to double as a home defense rifle and a deer hunting rifle I would get the M1A.
If I want a home defense rifle and I just plan on shooting it at the range or out on the farm for fun I would pick the AR.

You're divorced?

Nope, my wife claims one of "my" AR's, and has her own .22, .22 mag, Marlin 1894 Guide Gun in .44 mag, a 642, a Taurus .44 Special, and a Ruger Blackhawk in .45acp/.45LC. Good woman. And she's Sicilian and she can cook, so eat your hearts out!

Oh yeah, and a Kahr 9mm. Plus she's from Wyoming and we're planning on moving back to the Cheyenne area in a few years... :p

I'm not quite sure why anyone asks the "which one of the two" question to a bunch of addicts...The answer is always "both."
I am not an addict the corect answer is both.

OK so I'm in denial

I personally have no use for the .223 caliber. I personally don't like direct gas impingement. I have never had a need to even consider the AR-15, M1A all the way for me.

I would get the AR first, because I can clear a house with it, while the M1a would be great, a .308 would punch through too many walls an prove to ba a liability.

for me it all depends on mett-tc
depends on who, what where and when and how i am gonna be using it. i am most comfortable with the ar platform as i know it better than th em1a but i can use the m1a just fine, and would have no qualms about using one in a defensive/combat situation
