I have a friend who wants a red dot for his AR-15. I told him that Aimpoint or Eotech or Trijicon were the good optics. However, he is a penny pincher and does not seem to be biting on my suggestions. Are there any decent red dot scopes that are around the $100 price range? Thanks.

Primary Arms is good at $80.

It ain't no Aimpoint, but you ain't paying Aimpoint prices, either.

99% of red dots are plinking and people spend $500-$1100 on equipment they have absolutely no need for. You could get an EOtech or a ACOG but is it really going to benefit or justify a couple of hundred rounds at the range? Unless your a soldier at war or a competition shooter what good is a piece of equipment that far exceeds your needs?

Bushnell TRS-25 or Primary Arms is your best bet.

I'm getting a TRS-25 for mine. Seems like a good sight.

While my red dot is primarily for plinking it would certainly be used for HD if the situation ever arose. I love the aimpoint because you just leave it on so it's one less thing one would have to worry about in the middle of the night. The battery is good for 2 to 3 years of continued use. A tritium/fiber optic model would provide the same "no need to fiddle with buttons" benefit.

I'm not sure if they still make them but I also have a Nikon Monarch red dot which is a pretty nice little red dot for plinking.

I like the little Mirco Dots try this one at Primary Arms

I've one of these on an Ultimak gas tube on my SRB Draco-C. I like it enough that if it breaks I'll spend the dough on the Aimpoint to replace it.

All I have my MINI 14 for is when the world ends, China or Aliens invade, or the USA fails and we have to fight scum in the streets to live.

I do not hunt... But in such case I will take small game with my 22lr, but my MINI 14 wears an Aimpoint 9000sc because I do plan on fighting for my life.

It might not ever happen, but I am going to be ready just the same.

In a class we did earlier this year we timed people picking up their rifle, turning their optic on, and getting a hit on target v. just picking up a rifle with the optic on and getting a hit. On average, folks got hits .6 seconds faster when the optics were already on. The extra $ for an Aimpoint buys you about .6 seconds in an unexpected self defense situation. Each of us has to decide how much .6 seconds is worth.

By the way, getting a hit with open sights fell right in the middle - .3 seconds faster than turning on a red dot and shooting and .3 seconds slower than just picking up a gun with a red dot and shooting.
