I want to put a red dot scope on my AK, but not spend more than the rifle (EOTECH, Aimpoint, Trijicon, etc...). I was thinking of just going with a cheap 30mm red dot. I was looking at the Truglo 1x and 2x models. Everybody seems to make them: Tasco, Simmons, Burska, you name it. Does anyone have experience with any of these? Thanks for the help.

How are you thinking about mounting your optic? A new receiver cover with a weaver base, or are you going to use one of those mounts that attach to a side rail?

Or are you going to put it on the foregrip, kinda like a scout rifle?

I have a Truglo 2X Red Dot on my shotgun, it's about 6 months old and I haven't had any problems yet. The shotgun doesn't see the same amount of rounds as AK though...

They come with a 90 day warranty, so if you're going to break it, make sure to break it in the 1st three months...

If you factor in the cost of the mount, a Russian Kobra collimator sight will give you a higher quality sight for the money, IMO (assuming your AK has a siderail). Mine was $179 + shipping (less than $10) from Tantal. Details in this thread

One of the four selectable reticles. The reticle is actually red, but it washed out the CCD in my camera so it looked white.

I've been running a UltraDot Strike Dot for the past few months. It's an Aimpoint knockoff. So far so good. $110 shipped to you. Got 2 in stock if anyone's interested.

I only have a top mount on one AK (pistol). I don't remember the name but it's well made and has two set screws in the back to remove any play. It's a see through mount, allowing the use of the iron sights, so the Red Dot sits a little high. The cost was about $20. It's worked good.

As far as a cheap Red Dot sight, I use over a dozen BSA $30 sights and have had good luck with them (along with Tasco and Aimpoint). They are mounted on everything from 22 pistols to AR pistols and rifles, to 12ga pistol grip shotguns.

The problem with "cheap" is that they always tend to break right when you least expect it, or need it most.

Spend a little bit more, your gun is useless if you don't hit the target. I hear very good things about the Kobra.
