Did a ton of research and reading. These are the scopes I am thinking about. Rifle is an AR15 .223 with 16inch barrel 1x7 twist. Purpose is range use with some use out in the field and home defense. Want tight groups 100-300 yards and CQB.

Any opinions are appreciated.

Thanks!

Pretty tough to get a scope to do all this. The CQB need complicates things. Probably the best bet would be a low power variable such as the Leupold 1.5 - 5 or the new Trijicon 1-4. A higher power will give you marginally smaller groups at longer distances, but you will totally lose any CBQ capabilities.

I've got a TA-31F that I really like. Seems like a very good compromise. Some people really have a problem with the eye relief, and in that case the TA-11 would be a better choice. I really like the bomb-proof reliability, and no batteries for the illumination.

your really trying to cover too many bases with a single solution , but i understand the desire to have one rifle do it all ,

an aimpoint will solve the CQB senario and a tip off magnifier should get you out at range , if a lighted sight is desired , otherwise id look at the variable leupold sugested ,

how close is your cqb? you want 300yd groups and cqb, to much ground to cover. If CQB is that important, get a laser (and TRAIN with it) and you will be better off than any scope at less than 20 ft. Plus, you could fire semi-acuratly from many stance, without raising the weapon fully.

Beyond that, I dont know what to tell ya

Thank you for your replies. My CQB scenario is "just in case" home defense. I hope I never have to play that one out. The rifle will mostly be used at the local range at 100 yards and occasionally out to 300 when I can get to another location.

I pretty much knew it was trying to do too much with one scope but was hoping I would hear otherwise.

The Laser option sounds interesting.

From my research the S and B is the best "compromise" but is very expensive. Though an ACOG with a laser costs nearly as much.

From a cost stand point I would look at the Millett line up.

I have Milletts on 3 of my AR with great results and I didn't have to pay over 400.00 for either of them.

1) Aimpoint Comp M series with LaRue Tactical Mount.

Here's the high-end model at $735 (with mount).

AND

2) LaRue Tactical "Hensoldt 3x Magnifier" Po Boy Special with mount. $195.

Aimpoint makes the most dependable combat-proven red dot sight, especially for CQB. Also, unmagnified you can easily engage targets at 200 yards during the day.

LaRue arguably makes the best combat mounts.

The Hensoldt combination provides magnification for target discrimination at a pretty darn good value IMO. The magnifier can fold down out of the way allowing you to use the Aimpoint for CQB.

YMMV.

BSA (Tactical Line) Holographic Red Dot sight. Laser. Flashlight. Eleven brightness settings. Camera like steel aperatures that close over the lenses (integrated) for dust/glare. BSA gets a bad rap because of the cheap "Wal Mart" line they provide. But this tactical series is really nice. Range proven over and over again even during qulifications. I've really enjoyed it.......very reasonably priced, never falls out of zero, good battery life. My only complaint is that it's a bit bulky. It's no Eotech, Trijicon, etc. but I feel lots of those are over priced (paying for the name?) anyway.

-The rear knobs are windage and elevation
-The front knob (top) is the switch/battery housing for the red dot
-The part sticking out of the left side is the integrated flashlight
-The laser mirrors this, but is on the other side
-The wires that are visible go to the pressure switches I mounted on the handguard for thumb operation of the laser, flashlight, or both

Take a real good look at a Leupold ultralight 2x7 or even 3x9. Save yourself a TON of cash when compared to the tacticool options. I shoot in a few 3 gun matches and almost always have my scope on 4 power when the targets are mixed from 7 yards to 250.
