What is really the point of the AR 5.7? It is an inferior round to the 5.56, it is more expensive, mags are way more expensive...
Does anybody see a real purpose for this?

I thought it was mainly for novelty. I guess if you had a FiveSeven already and you weren't wild about the P90, an AR 5.7 would be a nice companion.

That upper's about 1/2 the cost of a PS90, and if you use a gutted 30 round GI mag, you have a perfect brass catcher.

Mostly novelty. Unless you're shooting penetrating ammo out of a PDW at somebody in a vehicle or wearing body armor, the alure of the 5.7 round kind of fades.

If you can get the good ammo then the 5.7 is a fine round. But the civilian round is just slightly better than a .22 mag.

I've been getting FN5.7 ammo for about $0.36 a shot, you pretty much have to shoot Wolf in your AR to be cheaper.

I've got the AR5.7 upper and its a good workup for my wife as she's getting comfortable with the Spikes Tactical .22LR upper, its nice to have something in between it and .5.56 for her to shoot.

The 50 round AR7.5 brand mags are easy to find for about $25 each and I can't see any difference between them and the FN one that came with the upper other than the logo. This compares favorably to the the $15 MagPul 30 round AR mags or the 27 round Black Dog AR .22 mags which run $20-25.

But I agree its mostly a novelty, and would be even more fun with cheaper ammo.

If the AR5/7 folks were really smart they'd mod the mags and upper to shoot .22Mag which runs about $0.20 a shot or so.

in an ar conversion, quite handy; fine close quarters round, good penetration, goes through any vest that doesn't have steel plates. Again, in a ar variation, you can put a 50 or 100 round mag, and it sits right in the middle and on top of the weapon; nice and ergonomic and out of the way. the mags are clear, so you can look right at them to see how empty you are, and they work well for lefties and righties because the empties drop straight down through your empty magwell. Since nothing protrudes from the magwell, this makes it easier to fire in the prone as well, and of course with no mag hanging down, one less thing to get hung up on.

goes through any vest that doesn't have steel plates.
Only if you buy the right ammo for it which is the same for 5.56, btw its ceramic plates if it matters.

And I was under the impression that SS190 ammo was strictly LE/Military. Not that you can't get it, but last time I looked it was darn expensive

As for the 5.7 in an AR platform, I tend to like the concept and have considered getting one a number of times. Partially because you can easily carry a large number of rounds in a compact and light weight platform (as opposed to something like a beta mag).

There's been a lot of debate over the performance of the 5.7 round. I've read of people using it for hunting from varmint to deer and hog. I tend to think of it as a pretty good varmint round, but too risky for larger game. For LE/Mil with the SS190, I think it is a pretty good round, especially with the P90. Mind you, this is just my opinion, though it seems to be shared by a number of agencies around the world that have purchased the P90.

Federal @ $0.39
Fiocchi @ $0.37
Aguila and PMC @ $0.35

Wolf is 10 cents cheaper. Personally, I'll go with the Federal/Lake City stuff over Wolf, but that's personal preference. nutnfancy on YouTube uses Wolf a lot and says it is crap, but it is accurate enough. He did find that it causes some jams in his piston ARs for some reason.

That's a nice price on the mags. When I was contemplating the 5.7 AR, the mags the dealers were selling were all $50, but I think they said they were factory FN mags.
