Anyone have experience with 20 rd AR mags w/ metal followers? These are the strait body mags. Do these type mags require any lube or can they be run dry like a normal ar mag?

Ive used them just like a normal mag. Dry. I keep loading and fireing

I strip all mags and give them a light hosing with Remington Dry-Lube spray.
It slicks them up and doesn't collect dirt.
But the GI 20's run dry just about as well.

"Dry Lube" Thanks. I was going to replace the followers if lube was required. Never thought about using that.

I use a product called "ice wax". It is a lubricant designed for mountain bike chains and gears. Designed to dry and not attract dirt, mud or other crap like many lubricants do. Works great on magazines. I use Lucas synthetic gun oil on the actual moving parts of most guns.
About 20 years ago I was working as a civilian trainer at the Army Ranger Mountaineering camp. As a known person round base and proven shooter had a lot of fun after work. One day at the armory I noticed a 55 gallon drum full of 30 round mags. Asked what was up and they said those were the trouble mags that eventually go to the scrap metal yard. I asked if could pick a few out and armorers gave me about 150 of them.
Took them to work, disassembled, cleaned, straightend feed lips etc and got about half working decent. Used them mostly as give aways when a friend would buy his first AR. As been inventorying ran across a box of about 50 which were ones that never worked to my satisfaction. Today I disassembled the worst looking 24 of them, cleaned, lubed with "ice wax" and reassembled using Magpul self leveling followers and Ranger plates on bottom end. Loaded all of them with 30 rounds and fired through 2 different AR's. Not a single failure, hmmm. I loaded them all again and rotated so that they all went into a different rifle second try. Once again perfection.
I took the six worst cosmetically looking ones, loaded them up with 10 to 30 rounds each and ran them through a rifle that has been fineky in the past. Darn if they didn't run perfectly again. Do not think the Ranger plates affected performance but looked cool. At 2 bucks each the self leveling followers may be best firearms dollars spent in years. Going to buy 30 more next week and turn that entire box of trash into quality mags. Darn nice to find a product that works so well and is super cheap.
