AR/Red Dot range trip report

I went to the range today to try out a cheap ($20) BSA “green dot” optic I bought from Cabela’s on my AR15 carbine. The main idea was to try out an optic I could use against Katrina zombies at close range with both eyes open. The initial theory seems to work out to around 50 yards. You can just keep both eyes open and hammer the center of a target all day long. However; this is a cheap optic and it was like looking through a coke bottle bottom past 25 yards and in the shadows. The left-to-right adjustment worked in reverse. Vertical was ok. It held zero for the short time it has been in use. The whole idea looks valid; but needs a quality scope to really work for me. Anyone looking for a cheap scope to experiments with? Thanks…

EOTech holds zero very well.

I use a lot of the cheap, $30, BSA Red Dots on everything from 22 pistols to 12ga shotguns. They aren't Aimpoints, but they only cost a fraction of what a Aimpoint does.

A couple months ago I was plinking at 100 yards using the BSA.


Not too bad for a 5 MOA $30 Red Dot.


The BSA doesn't do too bad on the Ruger Charger pistol either.

I have a Truglo red dot. I have it on a quick release mount. It holds its zero better than my friends EOTech. The BSA I bought for my sons 10/22 was crap. If you want a sub $100 red dot, go Truglo.

Don't forget Millet. They are some awesome red dots for around 70 bucks.

no thanks i don't need one to experiment with but i appreciate it, but i have an eo-tech ad it works great the best red dot optic in my opinion.

If you want a sub $100 red dot, go Truglo.

The Bushnell Trophy Red dot (or the Red/green dot model I have) is a good choice for just under $100 too, IMHO.I've had the red/green dot on my wasr-10 for 4 years now, and havent had to adjust it at all since I first sighted it in.the lens is very clear, and the reticles are nice and clean/sharp.
