AR scope question

Quartermaster:

Here is a link to some of the companies that have pictures of many AR's so you can get some ideas of what you want to do.

http://www.ar15.com/forums/b/2_Industry.html

Look at what other guys have done. You will find something that you like. Then you can start looking for the right parts. It’s a journey. Enjoy it, build it the way you want it

I decided to order a new upper from Stag. It has no suppressor on it witch makes it closer to being NY State compliant, no sights and a 24" bull barrel, free floated. It should do exactly what I want it to do. I will still have my old upper for CQ if ever needed.

Thanks guys for all your input. It was a learning experience

Nothing wrong with the 24” unit idea. That is the great thing about AR’s You can have multiple uppers (556, 300AAC, 68, 6.5G, etc.) Pop two pins out, different magazine and you have a different rifle.

Keep your eyes open and someday a super deal for a complete lower will come walking right by you and you will jump with both feet on it and then, you will have two AR’s

You have the AR sickness, now. LOL

Good Luck

Well MistWolf, you don't know me, but I can handle it. I wouldn't be afraid to take on Paul Bunyan, Tarzan, Chuck Norris, and Steven Segal all at the same time.

This upper will be used for varminting or target shooting with either a bipod, sandbags, or some kind of rest.

I will try to find some kind of electronic sight that suits my fancy for the lighter upper and use that for stomping around in the woods.

Wow that scope is way forward! I guess as long as it works for you, it should be fine.

What kind of scope is it? Is it a long eye relief scope? With that setup isn't your nose basically touching the charging handle (or very close to it)???

I have a Bushnell 3-9x40 long eye relief scope that is setup on one of my previous AR's, but not as far forward as yours. I removed the A2 rear sight and have it pretty far back above the charging handle. I'm not sure why yours is so close to the A2 front sight, although I see you have a rear sight behind your scope.

Here is the same scope mounted on my 15-22. Even without backup sights I don't have to put it so far forward like yours.

Heh! I've handled a few ARs with long bull barrels and even for a strong guy, an awkward, heavy rifle is an awkward, heavy rifle. It's my observation that awkward, heavy rifles don't get used as often, even for their intended purposes. I think an HBar profile barrel, even at 24 inches long, would be more practical than a bull barrel. If the barrel just made the rifle heavy, that's one thing. Awkward on top of that is another. My precision AR weighs 10.75 lbs. But with it's 20 inch HBar profile barrel, it balances well.

A 24 inch bull barrel would make it quite muzzle heavy which is awkward. So ask yourself, is the advantage of the bull barrel enough to offset the disadvantage of the awkward balance it will give the rifle? Will the awkwardness be enough of an annoyance to make a lighter profile barrel a better choice? I find the annoyance of the awkward balance grows with each step during a hike and each shot away from a bench. Just food for thought is all.

Justice, a lot of AR shooters mount their scopes forward to get proper eye relief. For awhile, due to the physical limitations of the mounting system I had on time, the rear of my scope was even with the charging handle. I could use it that way, but it felt awkward and I have to extend the stock out too far. Now I've got a cantilever mount I have the scope pushed forward and it's much more comfortable. The photo above was taken before changing to a cantilever mount. Haven't any updated photos yet

What will a scope "designed for an AR" give you that a standard scope will not?

The scope is a 3-9 x 40 vx3. I can't see how possibly I could shoot accurately at either short or long range, but I am hoping I will be able to. The objective of the scope is only about an inch behind the front sight and the sight post goes up 2/3 of the way towards the top of the objective.

A scope designed for an AR will not need to sit with the objective 1" behind the front sight. This close the blockage could be a problem. Get 4+" back and the front sight is pretty much invisible above 2X magnification.

OTOH, seems the OP has his answer despite being so close (see photo in post #13):
Looking through the scope at short or relatively long range, at low or high magnification, I see no sign of the front sight at all. As a matter of fact, everything is very clear.

I think I have the same problem. Hmm. I bought a Nikon 3 power scope for a colt 6920 with the FS post. I only paid $100 for the scope so I can get out of it but I think I need a new upper with no FS post. I was going to get a varmint upper anyway, but I would not need a 3 power scope on that. darn. Maybe it will work. I see other posts where it is ok, but kinda looks odd, IMO

You don't need a scope designed for an AR to get it away from the FSB. Saying a scope is designed for the AR is just marketing

If the FSP is blocking the target wouldn't that be a problem regardless of any other factor? This is not like a screen door or window being blurred out. Or dirt on the lense. In this case, there is an object directly between the eye and the target. This seems complicated and my brain may burst.

Simple things can be complicated at times. I will shoot what I have sometime in the near future at various distances just to satisfy my own curiosity.

In the meantime, I am going to buy an upper with a bull barrel as soon as I can decide on the length. I know I want a 24" eventually for PD hunts, but if I can get 3000FPS out of a 16", I probably will get one of them until that hunt gets closer

Thanks again for all the input QM
