AR15 barrel nut removal?

I'm having a heck of a time trying to remove the barrel nut from my Bushmaster. I'm starting to question if I'm going the right direction. I'm turning counterclockwise if you're staring down the business end of the barrel. Any ideas or should I just take it to a gunsmith?

If you are turning counterclockwise your are going the correct direction, just like unscrewing the top off a bottle of pop.

CYA questions....You did remove the gas tube didn't you.

If you have, then you might try a little heat on the barrel. The barrel nut may have been installed without antiseize lubricant. I would also try a little liquid wrench on the threads and let it set to give it some time to work it's way down into the threads.

Well I called a local gunsmith and apparently I'm doing everything the right way. He suggested hitting the wrench with a hammer to break it free.

yeah I used a guide over at AR15, everything is removed. I also used Kroil but without any luck. I'll have to try heat since that worked like a charm when I removed the bipod off my FAL.

I have heard of guys "glueing" the barrell into the upper reciever using some sort of epoxy. IT MAY BE POSSIBLE that someone did this and some of the epoxy worked it's way into the barrel nut threads. Just a thought.


If this did happen it may take quite a bit of heat to soften the epoxy.

Assuming that you're using an action block secured in a good vise, then just take a piece of pipe about three or four feet long and slip it over the barrel nut wrench handle. The extra leverage will set you free.

First time I ever did this was with an issue armorer's wrench (it was in the armory after all).

Rifle was a Colt sporter, and I found out Colt was using some sort of "anti sieze" that worked like threadlocker.:banghead:

A wrench that engages most of the teeth works best, and I have never had problems with a heavy duty barrel wrench, regardless of what was on the threads.

Luckily I got the nut loose before I ran out of teeth, but it was close...

1 HAVE YOU REMOVED THE GAS TUBE?
2 TAKE A HAIR DRIER AND HEAT THE UPPER AND THEN TRY IT.
3 THE TORQUE SPEC IS 30 TO 80 FT LBS
4 THEY CAN BE VERY HARD BUT I HAVE NEVER SEEN A FACTORY BUSHY
THAT WAS EPOXIED
