I'm starting to get a good feel for what I'm going to turn my stripped lower into. I'm going precision rifle basically intended for targets with the occasional venture to the fields for groundhogs, prairie dogs, or coyote. Maybe once a year for critters, the rest of the time it's a paper puncher.

I started off with an Anderson stripped lower. I then bought a used MOE Rifle stock, tube, spring, buffer off of a coworker for 40 bucks. So now I need everything else. Are there any places in particular that you folks go to get quality parts for reasonable prices?

I'm looking at 24" 20 tactical or 20 practical for the barrel, could use suggestions on where to source that more than any other part. Also I plan to run a quality trigger in the gun, so I'm looking at Geiselle, AR Gold, and Timney at the moment but haven't decided which one yet. I'm open to suggestions for other triggers too. I want a 15" either tube or key mod free float handguard. Prefer key mod to allow for airflow to cool the barrel. Last big purchase will be optics, looking toward a nice scope from a good company, likely vortex.

Other internal parts are not as big of a concern, but I do need those as well.

Pic attached just to show current status...basically at the starting point.

trigger: for target work get the Gieselle High Speed Nat'l Match. Its awesome.

barrel: no point going past 20". Get the best barrel you can afford; it's the most important part. White Oak PRECISION. (as opposed to white oak arms).

Why not .204 Ruger? Ballistically identical, but a production round with commercial brass having a proper headstamp.
Expensive brass to buy as opposed to an easy reform from .223. I will give a little elbow grease a whole lot quicker than I will give extra money. On that same note, the practical and tactical are more efficient. Being only slightly modified from .223 they also use all standard parts without modification, including and especially mags.

I'm kind going through the same thing at the moment concerning an upper build. I have a couple of upper receivers laying around doing nothing but, after a lot of research, I've decided to go with a White Oak Arms varmint upper. I can build my own for about 50 bucks less but for the extra money, if it doesn't shoot, I've got someone to complain to.

Use a Geiselle trigger, they're worth the money. PSA has good lower parts kits. I don't have an answer about a handguard, I'm going through that decision myself.

I have bought, traded,a and sold uppers over the years. I'm ready to build one so that it's a little more special. I think I will build or buy a cheaper upper to run once my lower is complete, that way it's not a year before I'm ready to go.

I fully understand. If you want special you might consider biting the bullet and getting a Krieger barrel. They're a little too pricey for me so I thought about using a 24" Wilson with a Wilde chamber cut by White Oak. For my purposes it became more viable to just let WOA build it but, I get you wanting to do your own.

I use standard 223 Rem magazines in both my 204 Ruger AR-15's they work fine.

One's a 24" barrel, the other is a 26" barrel. Good prairie dog medicine.

The only "special" part in my 204 Ruger AR-15's, not counting the barrel, is a heavier than normal buffer. The rifles are a bit over gassed, an adjustable gas block would probably work as well.

My 20P barrel is a 24" from Black Hole. Easy to neck down the brass and no fire forming or special dies.

I also have White Oak barrels and John will build a 20P. A 24" isn't listed here, but he will price one out if you contact him.

I use BTE adjustable gas blocks: http://www.bte-usa.com/#!receiver--rail-height-gas-blocks/cmag

JP triggers, but I also like 3 pound Timneys (just can't get used to two-stage triggers for precision work).

PSA for all other parts.
