the original 1911 went from the flat to the arched because it allowed for better point shooting for "the trenches" and gave a more natual pointing ability to the gun......

so why did the major players go from the more ergonomic arched to the gotta get used to it flat MSH?

why did the standard and prefered arched MSH get dropped for the flat one that wasnt prefered in the first place?

i like the arched, it fits my hand better and does provide a more natural point for me.

On balance I prefer the flat, but not enough to change out the guns I have that came with the arched. Doesn't really matter to my hand.

It's just personal preference. I prefer them flat. Some will buy pistols with arched but change them to flat and vice versa. Shoot what fits you is the mantra.

I prefer flat - fits my hand better, but I'll happily work with arched if I'm issued one. It's really a minor thing for me - no biggie.

I can shoot either. I have a small hand and prefer the flat MSH although I use the long trigger on that gun. I don't like the feel of the S&W M39 with its arched MSH and double action but I can shoot it. Wish it had a FMSH.

First 1911 was a Springer Loaded w/ a flat MSH. Now, arched housings feel kinda funny to me....

I like bobtailed. (I'm not trying to be a smart alec, it really is what I prefer). After that, I like the way the flat looks more, and I shoot flat and arched about the same, so I guess I prefer flat.

When using the sights, either.

For point/snap shooting I gotta agree w/ Uncle Sam that the arched MSH helps my POI come up a bit higher for some strange reason. Just the shape and size of my hands I reckon.

between the arched and flat iv shot i like the feel of arched. how ever im not turned off by flat. currently have arched but am concerning givin flat or maybe even bobtailed a try

The flat MSH is usually accompanied by a longer trigger, the arched by a shorter one. I have only tried the flat/long - on a SIG GSR - but it fits my hand and points well. It could still use about an eighth of an inch taken off the front of the trigger for an even better trigger reach.

i have to go with flat and long trigger, though I suspect that's just because that's what my first 1911 had and I got used to, and so that points naturally for me now. I have had both, don't really mind either, but had more with flat, and swapped the ones I had with arched to flat for uniformity. Although this can be somewhat affected by the style of grip safety as well.

I started shooting IPSC in the eairly 80's and back then was told either was fine, just don't switch around much, plus many though that the flat housing and long trigger was the best for small hands. My hands are small, so I strugged with that conbination for years, shot OK I guess, but then later I puchased a Colt Lightweight Commander with an arched housing, and started noticing that I seemed to be on target quicker and I was also experiementing with point shooting some, and found that I could really do better with the commander when shooting by the feel of the gun alone without sights.

So, I switched all of my guns to arched mainspring and short trigger and have never looked back, and I have consistantly shot better ever since. I think the major gun companies have all gotten into this flat mainspring thing, and since most people don't practice point shooting much, they don't know any better. Plus I must admit, I probably agree that a 1911 probably looks better with a flat housing and I think the gun companies do to. So the majority of gun companies are now afraid of loosing sales if they go to arched for the majority of their offerings.

That's my take on it, I know I won't be switching back to flat in my lifetime.

I never noticed this, until you said something...

I prefer flat MSHs, but after reading that post it may be because I prefer long triggers (I have monkey fngers).

I dont think I've ever fired a 1911 with a long trigger and an arched MSH. I'm gonna have to try it.
