See a lot of guns up for trade for other guns. By the time you pay your FFL twice (Send then receive) plus shipping you may be into $100 or so.
:scrutiny:

Well, if you find a custom, unique, or rare firearm, it may be worth it.

For instance, try finding a 5" N-frame S&W in any caliber. Good luck. If that's what you really want, you may have to find one out of state.

$100?

Shipping on a gun is only about $35 and transfer fees are $20-$30 in most places. So you're each looking at less then $75

Just how often do you come across people in your own state that happen to have exactly what you want and want exactly what you have?

I know roughly what it will cost to do the deal so I negotiate accordingly. The seller usually understands and will also negotiate accordingly. I have purchased several guns out of state via the 'net, and all has gone well. I was happy with what I received for the price. No different than going to the local gun shop and figuring the out the door price. You know tax, background check, another fees your state or locality may put on guns.

For example, that $550 Sig will need an additional $26 in taxes and fees to get it out the door.

Also in some cases a gun might sell for a substantially lower price in one area, but is rather high in another. Around my area N-Frame S&Ws can be pretty spendy items, but in other areas of the country they aren't. So sometimes you can find something you've been looking for at a better price even with the fees added.

I have seriously considered using vacation days to go trade in person.

Timing of the deal is the toughest, though: "Oh, sorry! I just sold it on e-bay!"

Blasted unconstitutional laws! Expletive! Most inconvenient.

'Time to buy up some machine shop tools and a huge stack of blueprints!

'Trouble is, those items may suffer the same fate!

"I'm sorry, Sir. You need a Federal Materials License to purchase that chunk of 4140 steel. Do you have a Machinist's License?"

The FFL I use will waive the transfer fee some of the time because I buy enough other stuff at his store. That just leaves the shipping, which is usually around 30-35 (including insurance). Even if I pay the transfer fee ($20), it doesn't come close to $100. If I am doing a trade, the other person is paying the fees on their end.

He's talking about a trade, not buying outright.

You have to double the costs, if your FFL will charge you for snding, then receiving. Legally, you don't have to use your FFL to send though.
