Are phone books good inicators of ballistics?

Did you ever the see the episode of the Soprano's where... I forget who was in the scene but some one held a phone book to someones chest and shot the phone book point blank. The bulet only made it to the Rs. Hahaha`haha

I saw the video of the Marine in Vietnam who charged up to a hootch, threw in a grenade and flattened himself against the outer wall -- as I'm sure he'd seen John Wayne do in the movies.

It was a grass hootch.
