Are primers in factory loaded ammo the same ones they sell reloaders? I have read about primer failures to ignite when shooting reloaded ammo, but you very rarely hear about a primer failure in factory loaded ammo. I would assume they are the same primers and reloaders get more failures due to other factors.

Federal does make some primers that are not on the street. This specifically is the Fed 216. There was a time when the only place to get Fed 215's was Weatherby back in the day!

They are the same. It wouldn't be economically feasible to produce two different lines of primers.

I've seen factory ammunition misfire, but it's a rarity. The primers are seated on automatic machines at the factories that are preset and inspected after priming. You won't very often find a high primer or a crushed primer in factory ammunition, though I've seen one with a primer seated sideways. Stuff happens, and when producing millions of rounds of ammunition, a stray is going to get away once in awhile.

Hope this helps.

Fred
