I handled a Springfield XD at a shop the other day. I was surprised that it fit my hand great and the trigger pull was like nothing I've tried. It was like a Glock trigger but a lot smoother.

How good are the Springfield XDs?

Are they reliable and accurate?

Is it true that they fit SW prebans without any mods?

The XD was first imported as the HS2000, also known as the Croation Sensation. They are regarded as good, solid, accurate pistols. I have handled several, but not shot one. Those I know who have them, don't want to get rid of them!

<How good are the Springfield XDs?>

Yes they are VERY good...

<Are they reliable and accurate?>

Very reliable and accurate

<Is it true that they fit SW prebans without any mods?>
NO...you can use Beretta mags, with some slight "fitting"

Although after the ban dies, high caps are not a problem...

I carry a XD-9C <~~~My preciousssssssssssssss:D

Two of our top local IDPA shooter use them, so they must be fast and accurate. They rave about them. Trigger pull is fantastic.
Personaly, I like to have a manual safety on a gun with such a light short first pull.
The new longslide (tactical ?) model in 9mm would be perfect for competition.

I sure hope they're good, as I just purchased one yesterday! :D
It's grip fit Me so well, I just had to buy it. The only problem if any, is that the finish on the slide could be better. Some have reported some light surface rust. Supposedly, You can send it back to S.A. for refinishing if this occurs. If it happens to mine, I might just send it over to Robar or something.

You can get some info on XD's here: HS2000 Talk

I agree with most of what everyone says. I think they are really decent pistols. I've fired about a dozen examples and most were great shooters but the trigger has never impressed me at all. They have all been pretty mushy feeling to me. The trigger reach itself is a bit too short for my hand but seems to fit most just fine. I'm not knocking the pistol, I think pretty highly of them. Just try before you buy applies here like everywhere.

I love my XD40, but I have had problems, as have several XD40 owners. There are several polls, discussions and a solution posted at hs2000talk.com. I have a thread here that discusses the problem as well. My gun is on its way back to Springfield in the hope that they fix the problem, but as of yet they haven’t even acknowledged that the problem exists.

You didn’t mention what caliber you were thinking about and from everything I’ve heard there are no problems with the 9mm or .357sig aside from the finish. If you get a .40SW or .357sig you can easily swap out barrels and shoot 9mm.

I have the XD-357 Sig. Fits my hand very well. I like the overall engineering and the grip safety. Shoots very well and is quite accurate. No malfunctions. Also bought a 9mm conversion barrel for it as well. Shoots great with the conversion barrel as well...and the mags that came with the XD-357 hold and fire 14 rounds of 9mm (and I did no modification to the mags of any kind).

Highly recommend the XD.

I have an xd40 4". They are very reliable and accurate. I've run about 1500 rounds through mine and had no failures at all until after 1000, since then I've had two FTEs. Guess it might be time to clean it. The finish on the slide is pretty crappy, I have some light surface rust on mine after taking it on a camping trip in humid area. I'm looking at getting another pistol, and when I do I'll probably send the XD back to get refinished.

Don't forget the stainless/nickeal/whatever option. It added a little bit of extra heft, but i've had no rust issues even using it as a carry piece.

The original HS 2000 was designed as a 9mm service pistol with the resources of a national government, not exactly a powerhouse, but still with more resources than any private company except maybe GM or Toyota. I think we can assume thay they tested the design. That applies to the 9mm, I am leary of handguns in calibers for which they were not originally designed. Putting a .40 on a 9mm frame reminds me of a friend's Ford Maverick with a 302 V8. Tight fit.
Mine is a Sub 9 and I am very happy with it. As you noticed, the grip is very comfortable, it is easy to strip, shoots good and is either ugly or tactical, depending on your taste. It seems to be one of the smallest handguns with a light rail. Beretta 92 mags fit with a little modification to the hole for the mag catch. BATF has stated that as long as the mag still works in a Beretta, it is legal to use B92 prebans in an XD. Also, XD forty mags can be used as 9mm hicaps with a little tweaking. Same rules apply. The steel parts seem to be blue steel, which means that they will rust. I have not decided if the reported problems are because of an inferior finish or shooters who are used to the bullet proof finish on Glocks, time will tell.
There are now a number of holsters for it, I just ordered an Uncle Mike's kydex paddle and mag carrier from Ultimate Outdoors, if I remember, I will post my impressions when I get them.

I have an XD9 I purchased about 5 months ago, so far about 1500 rounds through it. I had some stove pipes at first but it only started when I got to around the 90 round mark per session, and sometimes the slide wouldn't go fully back into battery. Turned out I was'nt lubing the slide properly. I switched my lube to FP10 and I've never had another stove pipe or any other kind. I only use this XD for a range gun. I'm thinking about getting an XD40 in 4". If its as good as the XD9 I may use the .40 as a carry gun.

The XD9 has been very reliable, pretty accurate, I'm very good with it at 15 yards.

My gun isn’t very old, but the finish has held up well. I’ve heard so much about the finish that I almost expected to be able to rub it off with my fingers. I apply a little oil to the slide and let it soak for a minute or two then rub it clean and I haven’t noticed any problems.

I also really like the trigger. It’s got a little over-travel, but it is fairly light for a factory trigger.

I was dead set on a different gun when I was encouraged to look at the XD by the salesperson. The XD was $10 more. I was a little turned off by the grip and trigger safety, as I’m not into gizmos on my guns, but it felt just right in my hand. I didn’t buy either gun that day, but came back the next and picked up the XD. When shooting I don’t notice the grip or trigger safety at all. I like the single action only and no manual safety now that I’ve gotten used to it. Good accuracy. It doesn’t really need to be cleaned more than once every 500 rounds even if you’re a clean freak. I clean mine out of habit after every range trip and it takes about 5 min because it isn’t dirty.

Its a good gun IMHO.

The only problems I've seen and heard of were XD 40s. Both would nose dive on the feed ramp. The slide had to be locked back and the magazine pulled from the gun. Another maybe 1/2 dozen .40s that I've shot, worked perfectly. I wish I could say what the outcome was with the 2 problem pistols but they were just range acquaintances.

After months of searching, I finally found an XD40SC... and now I have it!

Great companion piece to my XD40T :)

The tactical (5") was my first gun, and I've learned to be pretty proficient with it. I have not had any FTF/FTEs in the first 1200 rounds that I couldn't pass off as user errors (bad grip, poorly seated bullets in mag).

I just received my subcompact today, so I don't know how it handles, but I imagine I will be at the range sometime soon :) I plan on breaking it in, maybe 500-1000 rds, then sending it to APW/Cogan to get hard chromed.

As you've probably noted from the above posts, the XDs are well regarded. The only two things that I've noted as negatives are finish wear on the slide/small parts and a trigger reset that seems pretty far out (especially if you're used to a 1911-style feel).

I acquired my XD-40 Tactical in mid-2002. It made three consecutive trips back to Springfield right after that to address problems with the finish and sights.

However, since then, I have put over 13,000 handloaded rounds through the Tactical, with absolutely no jams or misfeeds of any kind. The pistol remains an absolute joy to shoot, and follows me to the range everytime.

I am seriously considering getting the 9mm bi-tone XD service model next.

I have three of them. Great pistols. No failures, accurate, and great ergonomics!

What's not to like?

FWIW,

I got to shoot one shortly after they hit the shelves. A guy at the range had bought one and was having a lot of difficulty hitting the target at 25 yards. He asked if I would mind trying it. I obliged and fired off a magazine full, all hitting the target at point of aim, 25 yards. It felt nice in my hand, reminded me of the way the Glock feels. I have never been a fan of the esthetics of Glocks or the XD, but they do feel comfortable in my hands. I like the grip safety idea since there is no manual safety.
