Are the people who bid in CMP auctions insane?

The CMP is currently auctioning off any rare M1 Carbine variants they find. The rifles in CMP auctions seem to be selling for a lot more than you can find the rifles for sale through dealers.

For example, Irwin Pedersen Carbines are pretty rare, but you can find them through dealers for usually around $1500-1600.

On CMP Auctions, they are going for $2500+.

What are these people thinking?

I've wondered the same thing. People are paying ridiculous prices for CMP guns these days.

People are paying ridiculous prices on all the firearms auction sites. Anyone found a good deal on Gunbroker lately? RC K98s starting at $400?? There's too many people with more money than sense and just bid until they get what they want, regardless of what it's worth.

Ethier people don't know what the value is of what they are biding on, Really want it bad, or get caught up in bidding frenzy.

At local auctions i have seen pay $250 for a used Hi point carbine. When at the time i Paid $179 for mine brand new.

IMO, since the influx and depletion through sales of M1 Garand returns from Denmark (all the way through the 40Xs and Greek M1s and M1 Carbines), the interest in CMP guns have gone through the roof. With people clamouring for these guns nowadays, the demand curve has passed the intersection with supply at super sonic speeds. I think the (true) stories of folks lining up at the stores before opening to pick up limited supply surplus/returned guns really plays into the hype.

A lot of it is ignorance...a lot of people do not shop around and think OH HEY THE CMP must be the best price and others do not care.

Well, I haven't seen much in the way of sane prices be it in many gunshops, pawnshops, or on the internet auction sites. I only deal with one dealer in my town because he has reasonable prices.

One pawnshop here in town wanted $300 for a really beat up, scratched up Henry lever action .22. The same rifle, brand new, can be had at Walmart for $215.

Some people don't mind, and even enjoy, paying extra for a CMP gun because they look at it as supporting an outstanding organization.

i saw an old beat up mossberg 835 that had mud in the chamber going for 300 dollars at a pawn shop when wal mart sells the exact same gun new for 20 dollars cheaper.

Jut because that is what they go for in your area, doesn't mean that is what they go for everywhere. Also, guns on CMP's auction site seem to be rare examples. Can't put a dollr value on somethign there isn't much of.

In addition, a CMP gun is papered to show its the real deal. As I'm buiying guns as shooters, that paper isn't worth taht much to me, but as a collector, it could well be.

With the ability to search on the internet, its pretty easy to figure out prices nationwide, and IP M1 Carbines usually run around $1500-1600, not the $2500+ CMP guns are getting.

An IP M1 Carbine sold by CMP is no more rare and special than an IP M1 Carbine from another source. The rarity of the CMP guns is only because of the rarity of IP carbines in general.

The paper that comes with CMP guns is worth something, but not $1000.

It's all a matter of what has value to you. I am not bidding on these things so I cannot tell you about that. What I can say is that my time has value to me and convenience has value to me.

Some people will spend lots of time looking here or looking there for a little better deal, spending a lot of time doing it. To me, my time doing things or spending it with my family has more value. If I see something I can get, I will probably get it, rather than spending lots of my time to save $50, 100 or whatever.

Just because people value different things and also even value money differently, does not make them stupid or crazy. Just different.

I guess you are right, but paying basically twice for something that you could easily buy over the internet anyway is just not something I would do.

if i was rich i wouldn't mind bidding on a cmp gun. first of all you must understand that if you make in excess of 150k a year 2500 for a nice gun doesn't seem crazy to you.

secondly, people who buy fromt he cmp also feel that they are supporting the cmp.
