I was just looking at Gun magazine and you pretty much can't have
any of the semi-automatic rifles listed in the new reviews with the
the exception of a Remington, in the NYC area. Keep in mind that in addition to these
rules that define an "assault weapon" as having one "evil feature"; upon contacting the permit division, i learned that you can't have a gun that
holds more than 5 rounds!

Ruger Mini seems to pass muster with the rules; it is banned outright by name however. Which I assume to be because of the tactical version of the Mini??? Just curious, would you have any luck registering an NRA hunting stock mini??

What gun can you have? An SKS with the bayo removed and replaced with a
5 round mag?

i also can't believe trigger locks are mandatory.

Anyway here's the link to the permit "package":

On August 16, 1991 the Mayor signed Local Law 78 which banned the possession and sale of certain rifles
and shotguns that have been classified as “ASSAULT WEAPONS.”
THE FOLLOWING IS THE DEFINITION OF AN ASSAULT WEAPON
(a) Any semiautomatic centerfire or rimfire rifle or semiautomatic shotgun which has one or more of the
following features:

1. Folding or telescoping stock or no stock.
2. Pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
3. Bayonet mount.
4. Flash Suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor.
5. Barrel Shroud.
6. Grenade launcher.
7. Modifications of such features, or other features determined by rule of the Police Commissioner to
be particularly suitable for military and not sporting purposes. In addition, the Police Commissioner
may, in such rules, designate specific semiautomatic centerfire or rimfire rifles or semiautomatic
shotguns, identified by make, model and/or manufacturer’s name, as within the definition of assault
weapon, if the Police Commissioner determines that such weapons are particularly suitable for
military and not sporting purposes.
(b) Any shotguns with a revolving cylinder magazine.
(c) Any part, or combination of parts, designed or intended to readily convert a rifle or shotgun into an
assault weapon.

To think I had some buyers remorse having just moved outside the city jurisdiction in Great Neck NY. I thought there was a possibility I could have maybe made it work out in the city, and I could have traded my bayo SKS and owned an M1 or a Garand or somethng old that took 5 round mags. I didn't realize those rifles held more rounds than that after reading the review in Gun. Man . . . talk about your socialist dictatorships. If you read the so called "assault weapon" description it actually says the chief of police gets to ban anything considered to be a "military" firearm and not for "sporting" purposes. :scrutiny:

You'd have to pay millions for a pad big enough to need a rifle's distance for SD/HD in NYC...i'd be more concerned about the round carrying through to the neighbors than the presence of a flash suppressor.

How about a CX4 in .45acp? I think that option might fit the bill and squeak through the legalese....still might hit the neighbor, though.

in NYC millions gets you barely distance for a handgun. I was passing by some $4 million houses the other day that are probably on smaller sized lots than most peoples' driveways out in rural land... all the more reason to hate living here...

That is an interesting point when you consider the small spaces in the NY area for housing I almost feel a little silly buying an SKS in my area -- that's right outside the city limits -- but still densely populated. I only did so to thumb my nose at obama but an SKS would be the last to be banned any time soon anyway.

I've never loaded the weapon and probably won't since I feel it could go through the neighbors walls etc. and I couldn't use it against an intruder for the same reason.

I'm not sure what to do about the firearm now. It seems kind of dumb to just have it sitting around a closet collecting dust, just in case a terrorist blows up the brooklyn bridge and a few other bridges and all hell breaks loose or whatever.

You think storing it at a range is a good idea?

I doubt it. I'm sure the law goes back years, and the list by name goes back to the Federal AWB. Remember that, from a gun ban point of view, a Mini-14 is practically an M-14, and has a lot of use by prison guards, etc. There has been an explosion of names and types of semi-automatic rifles since the first AWB.

I can feel your pain trying to understand the rules. I lived in Queens for years and just recently moved out to Pennsylvania. Smartest move I ever made.

While in NYC I eventually gave up on trying to get a gun license(needed for handgun or longun). It was impossible even after joining a gun club who vouched for my proficiency, recommendations from my uncle who is a Queens D.A. and a police Captain he introduced me to and using a lawyer for the process. I requested a permit (not CCW) because I work at an inpatient psychiatric unit in a city Brooklyn hospital and worried of "payback" by a patient. I was told this was not good enough justification for a weapons permit. I was forced to do what so many good citizens do in NYC and make a choice between an illegal shotgun and go with judged by 12 vs. carried by 6 or be disarmed. (I say shotgun because without SHTF situation I believe a rifle is not necessary and an illegal handgun would be prosecuted with greater ferocity)

Like I said I got out to P.A. an all my guns from my parents house in Nassau County came with me. Best move I ever made. Now a Glock resides on my hip at all times. I only needed a PA drivers license to get it and the permit to carry it concealed was just slightly harder to get than buying a longgun in Nassau County.

Nick_007, the simple solution is to send the sks to my local ffl. Problem solved

OK just ship a "black rifle" to my FFL in return :neener:

Slightly harder to get than a long gun in Nassau? I showed up said here's drivers license filled out the FFL paper, one phone call to whoever they call; and i went home with my rifle. Lets not make the situation worse than it is.

That is why I left New York state. Now living free on the bayou of Louisiana were the SHTF when the wind blows hard.

If this is all you did then you do not live in NYC but rather a surrounding county or your license is giving and address for a surrounding county and you illegally have brought the weapon into NYC. In order to purchase any gun in NYC you need a permit, although the permits for a longgun verse a handgun is different. If you live in Nassau county then NYC's ban does not affect you and you can even purchase a preban AK or Ar if you wish. There are plenty available if you are willing to pay the price.

And for my concealed weapons permit (LTCF) I showed up at the sheriffs office with my filled out paperwork which is not much more info than your standard NICS paperwork minus the two referrals. I was in and out in fifteen minutes and my permit was ready two weeks later. Given the difference in the easy at which you were able to get a longgun to keep in your home and take to the range verse what I did to get the ability to carry a handgun concealed in public to me is pretty equal.

I said before I moved to Nassau from the city and just out of curiousity was wondering what kind of firearm you can actually own given the laws.

I'm a Long Islander, however I have a friend who lives in Queens and shoots 1911s competitively. Owns some sixguns too. Keeps them all locked up in his safe. That being said, I'd never live in the five boroughs.

Long Island is okay unless you want a CCW. But I happily own Polytech M14 rifles, as well as Garands, plus "less dangerous (LOL)" weapons like my Lee Enfields, and '03 Springfields!

1911s too (of course!).

The laws only get in the way of owning semi-autos and handguns. My dad has a lever action rifle and I have a pump-action shotgun. If you want pretty much anything in semi-auto, you're better off moving to another area, which is exactly what I'm going to do when I finish college.

Seems to me that NYC is not a very friendly place to live anymore.
I've only been to NYC once in my teens and I doubt I'll ever go back.

I'm sure there are some really good people who live there,
but with the high cost of living, the high taxes, the criminal element
and the seemingly tyrannical government restictions...
I just don't think the place is going to be a 'go to' city for people in the future.

In fact, I'd bet more people are considering escaping from New York than flocking to it.

the criminal element

NYC is one of the safest big cities around.
It's not the 80's anymore, and hasn't been for decades.
However, it might be heading back that way with all the
money draining out.

I don't live there anymore. Did you know airguns are completely illegal?
I'm told by folks I know that the regulators are coming after lever-actions holding more than 5 rounds too - including .22's.

They're psycho. And if you make a stink they'll find an excuse to take all your guns away - they're all registered, so they know what you have. And even if they weren't, it's not that hard to search a 2-room apartment anyway.

NYC's heading down and for more reasons than just gun control.

At the same time I want to move and yet can't seem to want to live anywhere else, I was born and raised here and should do my best to defend it. That's scary coming after "assault weapon" lever actions... and I already knew the airguns are illegal...

Lot's of things are illegal that you couldn't even fathom them being that way, here.

I will say, though, it is pretty safe. But at what cost?

yeah, like dancing without a license.
(technically the establishment needs the license, but still....)

I will say, though, it is pretty safe. But at what cost?

Indeed. Tho clearly the gun control cost doesn't contribute to general safety, for all the usual reasons. But what does Bloomberg know...
I'm so not fond of that man.

All this assumes the people of NYC give a damn
some do, but not enough.

I sympathize with your predicament, Foofles. I lived in NYC for nearly 10 years and only recently left. The City has a lot to offer that other places just can't touch. Unfortunately you have to put up with more and more crap to take advantage of it. The place has truly changed a lot in the last 10 years.

I couldn't agree more Daizee. Many of my friends are recent immigrants and/or too young to really remember NYC to even pre-Bloomberg. It also doesn't help that Albany mostly sees the city as a source of revenue for its own pet projects... so they won't do much to help us.

It makes me sick that Bloomberg is pulling everything he can to sidestep the law and run for a 3rd term.

Also unfortunately most people I talk to answer me with "I'd love it if they'd ban all weapons" or just simply don't care about anything that doesn't affect them. MTA raises fare 50c? They break out all hell.

Lever Action 30-30 Is Good To Go In NYC!

Well I don't see a lever action 30-30 on that list...or a double barrel 12 gauge side-by-side. There are plenty of posts and threads on here that ask "if you could only have one..." where the answer is a lever action 30-30. So I guess if I lived in NYC that's what I'd get.

I think the only long gun I'd get is some kind of shotgun. I can't see much opportunities beyond SHTF to have one for HD in a Brooklyn apartment building, and it can be used for skeet/trap.

I'd love to have an AR or something but at least I can still rent it outside the city to shoot... I think.

I have heard about the only kind of firearm one can have in NY period as a non resident is a long gun, unless going up there for an NRA sanctioned pistol match....very strict guidelines and you must arrive no more than 2 days before the match and get out of the state no later than 2 days after the match. I'd stick with a shotgun or a little carbine if i had to travel to New York. Unlicensed handgun possession penalties sound pretty stiff!!!! If I can't carry it...a shotgun does just fine in a hotel.

A 30-30 lever action is a pleasant rifle to shoot, reliable, and easy to carry. It points like a good bird gun. If I had to move to NY and wait on a NY handgun carry license, I'd still have a good 30-30in addition to the shotgun. A good 22 rifle is a must too just for indoor range fun...and a 22 is nothing to laugh at shot from a rifle.
