Are there any quality .45 (or other) carbines out there?

I like the CX4 but the plastic parts don't look like they could hold up under extreme conditions, and if I remember correctly a magazine holding less than 10 rounds in a carbine size weapon is kind of.... a waste of space?

The Hi-points are just.... I don't think they are my cup of tea. Again, lack of capacity is worrisome combined with the whole "will this thing fall apart after 10k rounds" factor.

With the combination of A) ammo scarcity and price gouging and B) me starting to reload, beginning with .45 acp (and .357/38spl) - I'd like to find a nice .45 cal.

I'm not concerned about rifle calibers.... I've got all the rifles I want for now. I don't like to stock up on much rifle ammo because it's only for occasional range use or hunting.... hence the desire for a pistol caliber long gun.

I am pretty much not interested in tacticool rifles, but since I have an extra EOTech and TLR-1 lying around, and don't really have a tacti-kewl long gun so I figure if there is a .45 out there I would be really interested.

My needs:
1) 45 acp
2) magazine capacity must be same or better than my G21 (13 rds)
3) it must have "to hell and back reliability"
4) I would like it to have a rail to mount the EOTech.... if I am not going to mount the EOTech or the TLR-1, I might as well get a lever action .357.
5) The HK UMP looks cool, but "I suck and they hate me" so I don't know if I want to dish out over a grand for a marginal product. Also, the mag price and capacity seems kind of stupid when I can get a 25 round G21 mag for $50.00

6) Should I just stick to the G21 and not have a cool carbine with an EOTech and TLR-1?

This gun would be used for:
1) range
2) possibly HD
3) Zombie attack
4) I have no idea if they are allowed in 3-gun competition

If I don't find anything, there is always the lever-action .357 instead. :)

I did forget about this one, but I don't think you can mount an EOTech to it. :p

i had (until very recently) an UK UMP conversion that used grease gun mags. was perfect for me since i also had a FA mac10 that used same mags.

i was very happy with the quality of the HK. never had a problem with it.

they are pricey though...

a Mech-tech CCU might fit the bill.... but it might just be too ugly even for me.
Are there any reviews or online torture tests of it? The lever-action has proven itself in the Old West. Until today, I had never heard of a CCU except maybe skimming over an ad in a gun rag.

It makes the lever-action .357 look better all the time even if I can't put a bunch of doodads on it.

The HK UMP looks cool, but "I suck and they hate me"

Where does this come from, anyway? I feel like this is the product of a couple people having bad experiences and it propagating around the internet freely. I haven't heard any recent horror stories referring to their customer service. The folks over at hkpro.com seem to have nothing but good things to say about their customer service.

So why do you think this? What, again, recent stories do you have to back this up?

PS - If you're going lever-action route, go for the 44 mag, I love mine ;)

Reconsider the Storm.

Granted, your criticism about the lack of higher capacity magazines is totally valid. Stock mags are 8-rounds but there are aftermarket mag-bases that allow for two more rounds. Now I know that's not great, but 10 rounds of .45 ACP in a (IMO) well-designed carbine is still a lot of fun.

There are also a couple of different guys making replacement parts out of steel for some of the higher-wear parts in the Storm.

Uzi with .45 conversion - 25rd
Cx4 .45 with hi cap mags
USC or UMP with greese gu mags
kriss .45 with a 30rd

If you can't pick from those five then get the 357 lever gun

A satire article floating around on the internet.

But really.... HK prices are just exorbitant for a product in the same league as much less expensive firearms.

mag capacity is to low, but you might consider the marlin camp carbine as well. feather makes (or made) one of their rifles in 45 (rav-45 maybe) and olympic arms makes a 45 cal conversion for the AR. (takes a modded uzi mag) do they make a semi auto grease gun?

the 357 carbine is a wonderful gun. I have 2, and everybody loves them both. the marlin can be fitted with a scout rail and dot scope if you want.

and the mech tech comes in enough configurations you might find one you like. http://www.mechtechsys.com/glock.html maybe lose the muzzle break and add the quad rail and telescoping stock?

I think the Cx4 is a fine carbine...I'd even go as far as to say it is just as good as the Thomson, and better than what I have heard about the new TC models. The Cx4 is a great fun/HD gun. The .45 Uzi isn't a bad idea either (it would be my choice with a SBR conversion). :)

I have a IMI UZI that is in 45 ACP. I got the parts that allow it to accept grease gun mags. Mine is the carbine, 16 inch barrel and folding stock. This thing is built like a tank and has yet to jam on me. Only thing is I'm not sure about optics mounting.

I still have this crazy idea of building an integrally suppressed Glock or Para Ordnance based MechTech CCU.

I have noticed that on the Mech Tech site they are starting to dress up the CCUs pretty ugly ... the basic unit with the muzzle brake, tele stock and maybe the monorail is much more attractive than with the AR15 carry handle and other crazy crap (and why does everything have to have a CAR stock on it ... the whole point of the CAR stock is that the buffer/spring assembly won't work with a side folding stock, yet we stick them on guns that could use a simpler stock design).

Amen, I wouldn't have it on anything but a AR, and even then I think there are better options. :)

Thanks for the link Zundfolge, I may have to get one of those chambered in 45-70. Any idea on the cost?

you said "or other" so i would look into the big bore ar market like the 50 beowulf (sp?) or the 450 bushmaster.

way way WAAAAAAY more power.

It won't be out until this fall, but MSAR is making a pistol-caliber blowback AUG with ambidextrous downward ejection. It's coming out in .45 ACP first and will take G21 mags, including MagPul's extended-capacity G21 mags.

Looks pretty awesome, and is supposed to retail around $1000. For what it's worth, MSAR's .223 AUGs are getting favorable reviews up there with Steyr's more expensive versions.

Here's the prototype .45 AUG they hope to put out later this year:

Man that thing is ugly, but I like the concept. I hope that they smooth out that magwell on the production model. Where is the ejection port?

I have had MechTechs both in .45 acp and in 10mm, but came to the realization eventually:

Pistol rounds are for pistols (and suppressed, full-auto carbines); Rifle rounds are for rifles & carbines.

So are you sure you "need" it? Because if you really need a to-hell-and-back-reliable carbine that ain't full auto and/or suppressed, then I submit you need said carbine (badly) chambered in a rifle round. :p
