I was all set on getting an underfolder AK but so many people have told me that shooting one is very uncomfortable. Now I'm not sure what I want...:banghead:

Thanks

I had a side folder on my SKS. Hated shooting it with the stock folded, just seemed unnatural. Finally one COLD winter morning I unfolded it and the stock broke and kept flying. Put the original stock back on and never looked back.

all ergonomics aside, how else are you going to get a full size battle rifle that compact? I like them, a lot.

I wanted an under folder AK for the longest time. I finally bought one not too long ago ( M70 ) and traded it pretty quick.

Why would compactness be more important than shootability? Ergonomics should be the first consideration and everything else secondary. An AK isn't all that long, even with a fixed stock.

I had a Norinco underfolder for a while.

The underfolder's rails didn't like my face, or vice-versa. I've since found a more comfortable way to get a folder AK that doesn't hurt my face, and still has decent ergonomics. It's the Romanian/East German wire sidefolder. Very stout, and solid lock-up in both open and folded positions:

Underfolders can get a little wobbly compared to a real military sidefolder (like the East German or Romanian). The underfolder can also be a little inconvenient to extend. Extending one when you have a 30 or 40 round magazine in the well becomes a problem (which is the reason for the 20s).

The only advantage to the underfolder over the sidefolder is it looks cooler to some, whereas the sidefolder has a number of advantages over the underfolder.

Neither folding stock is as comfortable or will give you the cheek weld of the fixed stock.

I like my AK underfolder. The stock feels solid enough (I'm not going around butt-stroking anything with it, but for shooting it's fine). Cheek weld isn't as bad as I thought it would be. It's not uncomfortable (not as comfortable as a wood stock, but not bad either). Can still fold it and unfold it with a 30rd mag (obviously not with a drum and probably not with a 40 rounder).

Thank you everybody, there's a gun show this weekend so hopefully I'll be able to hold and underfolder, sidefolder, and fixed AK.

Underfolder is rock solid. I just watched Rambo beating on a steel grate with one.

Just shouldering one, was enough to put me off.

I love mine...Yugo M95 in .223... Cheek weld isn't perfect, but it is there, and easy shooter...Never gonna sell it.

my dad's yugo underfolder is sweet and it is actually softer shooting than my mak-90 and alot more comfortable too shoot as well. i though the metal stock was gonna be a problem but that is the fartherest from the truth in my experience with his.

I would almost bet you that you will not find a high volume shooter with one. (That he uses a lot)

Underfolders:
-Are cooler looking
-HURT to shoot a lot
-will NOT open with >30 round mags/drums
-are not as durable as a side folder
-Do not allow you to switch between a folder and a fixed stock like other folders will.

I bought one a wile back just because I didn't have one. It was part of the deal for the Tactical Response training I recieved. They wanted one to show people how BAD they were in actual function... and I was glad to get rid of it.

Hello, I'm that hi volume shooter. I love the Yugo UF and have no problem
folding/unfolding the stock past 30 rd mags of any make, metal or plastic.

At this point, if I had to grab one rifle for SHTF it would be out the door with
me as I left an assortment of other EBRs behind.

If your face hurts when you shoot it, learn to smile more :D

What the HELL? I guess you should be happy part of the training wasn't showing you how bad it hurts to get shot in the foot.

Underfolds were first made for Soviet mechanized infantry, so that they could fire at capitalists inside the comfort of their BMP armored carriers. If it was possible to use regular AK on those firing ports, I don't think they would have bothered.

Kaylee, it's a combination.

The furniture came from K-Var, but I didn't like the finish. So I stripped it, sanded it, stained it, and gave it a proper boiled linseed oil finish. I'm not ever going to call an AK "pretty", but it at least cleans up fairly well for my personal HD gun. :D

Here's how they look coming from K-Var:

El T, I'm taking my underpowered, flimsy AK to the Michigan tactical carbine course soon, vs. my AR. You're more than welcome to come along and remind us how marginal the system is. ;)

No need to remind anyone. There are lots of people walking around that were shot with 7.62x39.

I'm just saying that the underfolders are not uncomfortable because of the mildness of the round.:)

Having a mild round is not necessarily a bad thing. Especially if you shoot all class long.:D
