I'm out for fun and for meat. I have a 13 point 174" nontypical on my wall right now, so the bar for antlers has been set pretty high. I'm not hanging anything smaller on the wall unless it has three antlers or the rack looks like the virgin Mary.
Last year I got a big sized 12 point mule deer. I usually hunt for antlers but this year will be different. I have been hit by hard economics times and may not be able to afford to go hunting as much as I have in the past. I am going out with my son and will fill tags as soon as I can as long as they are big bodied enough. After it is all said and done, we need the meet and love to eat it. I hope that my son will get his first deer this year. He got a shot last year but missed.
I've hunted big bucks on occasion, it gets stressfull and consuming sometimes. You end up passing on a lot of good deer. And, you spend a lot of time and effort that may or may not pan out.
I solved the problem by just taking a week off during peak rut. More activity, more opportunity.
Sometime during that week, somethings going in the freezer.
We do work the antlers into "stuffs", knife handles, spear shaft ends, jigs, sculpures, ect.......and I do have about 9 or 10 Muskox skulls I have no idea what to do with, 'cept decorate the storm shed roof....LOL!
Meat. I would rather take a young spike than a trophy buck. Tastes better. I enjoy the "sport" of it, but see no need in getting a trophy out of it... Besides, it would just be one more thing for the wife and I to argue about... She is the decorator...
Both. For instance, I'll get an antlered elk license and an additional cow/calf license. Yearling or two year old cow for the freezer, then I go for the trophy. I no longer whack just any old bull elk. I see no sense in shooting a bull that is destined to become a real monarch in just a few more years. I would just as soon see them grow up and become cannon fodder for outfitters, guides, and non-resident hunters.
i hunt just to be hunting. when i shoot its for meat. regardless of whether it has horns or not. with that being said tho i imagine i will become a trophy hunter in a few years with my bow at least, but then one never knows, yearling doe sure is nice
I don't buy meat or poultry during the open seasons. No room for it in the freezer because it's full of wild game and fish.
I have no problem taking a trophy animal if I am so blessed with the opportunity.
Should of seen me about 15 yrs ago when I lived in the "Big City" before I moved to the country and started hunting......sad sight I was....total "City Slicker"
