Heres the story.... My father-in-law asked me to look at "a jap rifle" that he had tucked away in his parents attic. He wanted me to find a few parts for the bolt at a gun show i was going to. Once i started looking at it i saw what looked like a scope mount on the left side of the reciever. I got out some of my books and found out it is a type 99 sniper. I am haveing a hard time finding parts and information on the rifle. it doen not have the scope, the fireing pin, fireing pin spring, safety knob/back of the bolt, cleaning rod, bayonet, and i need thee two screws for the front barrel band, and two more screws that go from the floor plate to the barrel/action that hold it in place.
1.where do i find the corect parts.?
2.how much should they cost.?
3.which style safety knob is correct to the rifle?
4. any idea what it is worth, both now and after it is complete.?
5. Also i cant find a serial #....only markings i have found is "99 type" and the arsenal marking for Nagoya Arsenal 1923-1945
any information is greatly appreciated.

IIRC, the serial number will be stamped along the receiver below the bolt, on the same side as the bolt handle. The digits are fairly widely spaced.

Are you sure the scope mount is an original Imperial Army one and not an sporterization? True Arisaka snipers are pretty rare.

Also, once you find the serial number, check to see if it matches the number on the bolt. That will make a big difference in value.

My father has a Type 97 sniper with an original but non-matching scope, that IIRC he was looking at selling for around $2000 or $2500. That said, the value can really vary with some details. The folks at the Arisaka forum that the other guys have linked to can hopefully help you out more.

i do believe it to be an original sniper, the bolt looks to have been turned down when it was made, it would be longer than an original straight bolt if it was straight, also there is no welds, or evidence it was heated and bent. the scope mount is strange...it looks like the scope slides in and is retained by a "spring clip". my father-in-law purchased it from a friend around 1970 bolt parts missing, and the sellers father had brought it back from the pacific. as far as the serial #.....i have read that the serial # on snipers were relocated to the top of the reciever. the only # i can find is on thetop rear of the recieverunder the arsenal mark....it is "74" and the "74" apears twice on the bolt. Is it posible this is the serial #?

Well, the serial number should be 5 or 6 digits, though only the last few will be stamped on the bolt and other non-receiver parts. I don't know about the numbers being relocated on the snipers, could be the case.

Also, FWIW, the scope should be offset to the left of the rifle, rather than being directly above the bore.

If you can take some photos of the rifle (including details of the scope mount and what might be the serial number), I can show them to my father. He knows Arisakas way better than I do (and he wrote one of the books that this info is copied from).

You can attach them with the attachment feature or post them on photobucket or the like and hyperlink the address as an image by hitting the little picture button above the text.

My advice is to do NOTHING with this rifle until you have the ID confirmed. The gunboards Arisaka forum is an excellent source of info. I'd suggest posting there with as many details and pics as possible and getting their opinion as to whether it's a real sniper or not. The fakes and replicas outnumer the real ones fifty to one. The real ones are worth a chunk of change, too. Even mumless.

I have verified it is a real sniper..thanks to you all and the great folks at gunboards. now the hunt for the parts i need...-k

Thanks for all the help. the guys over on gunboars reaaly had all kinds of info for me. heres an update on what i have found out...
1. is a real sniper.
2.serial # 74..very low and from what i am told only two lower are know to exist #73 and one other that is lower.
3. looks to have a refinished stock.all well...
4. bore is great
5.all parts should be easy to find, except the scope, which will be a hefty price.
