Has anyone on this list bought one of the Armalite AR-24 pistols yet? I am just wondering what you think of it and how well it performs. Is it a decent bang for the buck? I kind of like Armalite firearms. My dad owns several of their rifles. I've never shot or even heard of a pistol made by Armalite.

I'd be interested to hear opinions / commentary from anyone that has owned and used this pistol or any other pistol made by Armalite.

I'm thinking about buying one or two of these pistols and just wanted to do a little intelligence work up front before I spend any cash.

I just can't get myself to pay so much more $ for a clone made in Turkey. How much better could it be than an original CZ?

Try looking here for more information http://www.nrapublications.org/TAR/OldSchool.asp. It has a forged frame and the CZ75 no longer uses a forged frame. Sarsilmaz is also a 120 year old company with a good reputation.

I haven't shot one of these but I have handled them in the store. They appear every bit as good if not better than the current CZ75. They also have plans to make a stouter .45 version and then a .40 version based on the .45

CZ has NEVER used a forged frame on the 75/85 series. The 75/85 series frames have always been investment cast, with the exceptions of two prototype series made in 1972-1974.

IMHO, these pistols are overpriced when you compare them to the Tanfoglio and CZ-UB offerings. You are basically paying extra for Armalite to make a nice killing. (Springfield XD anyone?)

To me, this is one of the BIG sleepers in the gun world. I acquired one last year, and it is became a favorite. When you pick it up, you can see the fit and finish workmanship that went into this pistol. I have had and shot a CZ 75B for about five years. It is a good handgun, and I do enjoy shooting it, but I believe the AR-24 is a superior handgun. Here is why.

  1. Forged frame as well as forged slide. This really isn't a big deal unless you like forged steel; I do, so it is to me. Some believe that cast is as strong and durable as forged steel. That may be true is some circumstances, or it simply may be strong enough for the task. Either way, CZ knows the forgings they use for their slides is stronger than castings, or they would use castings for their slides too...it is cheaper.
  2. Grip insets further into the backstrap - makes for incredible eronomics.
  3. Firing pin safety spring relaxes when trigger is pressed instead of compresses - makes for a better trigger pull.
  4. Firing pin stop is the 1911 type and not a roll pin. - This means you can dry fire without worrying about breaking the roll pin.
  5. There isn't the loooonng camming of the hammer when you pull the trigger. - makes for better shot placement.

I generally hear two redundant themes from the AR-24 detractors. "It is a clone or a clone of a clone", and "I'd rather have the real thing." To the former all I can say is that my favorite platform is a 1911. I can think of no other handgun that has been cloned as much. In fact, I have a Norinco that is a wonderful 1911, and I'm not about to get rid of it.

In reference to the later, I must say that is a wonderful slogan for a Coca-Cola marketing VP, but in the realm of handguns, I enjoy a little competition and evolution.

Give it a try. Both the AR-24 and the CZ 75B are good guns. I personally believe the AR-24 is a little higher quality handgun.

I'd be more likely to try it if the price was more in line with what other Turk handguns sell for. I know it's forged and all but I feel a big part of the price is the Armalite name.

The Stoeger Cougar seems to me what a Turk handgun should be, a quality clone at a reasonable price.

I wonder how wel this gun is selling and if it will last on the market? Companies in Switzerland and the UK have also made high cost CZ clones that I rarely see on the US market, I think the UK company is defunct.

I've got one, and I absolutely love it. I don't really understand the objections either. The gun shop where I bought mine has another one -- the fixed sight version -- that sells for $50 less than the comparable, fixed sight CZ75.

I've shot mine extensively now, and it shoots very accurately, and so far has digested everything I've fed it without a hiccup. And I really do think the grip just feels much better in the hand than the CZ. The indentation on the backstrap for the web of the hand is just a little deeper, and the palm swells in the grip fill the hand better. I also like the trigger just a little better. And finally, I really think the gun just looks better, which is purely a secondary consideration, but it's nice even so.

Really, I think you can't go wrong if you are looking for a CZ-type 9mm. It's a great bargain.

I bought one. I really like it - I bought the "tactical custom version" that has the adjustable sights, checkering, etc.

I bought it from Armalite for the same reasons people buy 1911s from makers other than Colt - it had some features that I really liked that aren't available from CZ. Not everyone buys a 1911 from Colt, not everyone wants to buy a CZ 75 design from CZ. Some folks do wan to buy from CZ, and thats fine with me.

Just for those who care, Armalite is positioning this pistol somewhere between the CZ products and the Swiss products in the price/quality curve. They were not attempting to make a "cheaper than CZ" clone.

I am happy with it. I like the heft, and it seems very well made. My grandfather was a machinist and my dad put himself through college working as a machinist at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard. I have no skills in that area, but I really like the look and feel of well machined steel.

I had also heard very good things about Armalite customer support.

It's a good shooter, looks very nice, and fits my hand really well. At a price I wanted to pay. What could be nicer?

To each his own. I was glad to have the choice.

Mike

Does it use CZ or EAA/Tangfolio magazines?
It uses EAA/Tanfoglio spec magazines. I wouldn't buy an EAA mag, but instead buy an original armalite or better yet a mecgar magazine made for tanfoglio pistols. The quality is much better than an EAA mag.

This is the mag I use in my full size AR24. That or the two armalite mags that came with the gun. I bought an EAA mag and had problems with jams. EAA sends a disclaimer with their mags stating no refunds or exchanges for magazines period.

I have been thinking of adding another to my collection. I have the fixed sight model, but would like to have one with adjustable sights.

I have handled several and am impressed.
It is one of the handguns on my 'if I really thought I needed another 9mm handgun I would buy this list.'

I going to the range now, and I'll be carrying my AR-24. Thanks JHasenAK47 for the tip on the magazines.

I won't be buying one as I like the CZ's I own, but there's nothing wrong with another seemingly excellent clone of a great design. More choices in a CZ type firearm is good IMHO.

The only store local to me sells them for at least $100 more than a comparable CZ pistol.

I'm not overly excited about the AR-24, and don't see myself picking one up any time soon. If they took CZ mags, I might have given one a shot, but since I have already have a stack of CZ mags, I just don't see the point.

If/when the .45 cal version (AR-25?) hits the market, that may be another story, but outside of 45 ACP, I'm quite happy with my CZs.

Thanks for all the good input

I really appreciate all the comments on this. Thanks guys.

I think I will just pick up one for now. It sounds like a great gun for the most part. I like good, hefty forged steel guns too. I never did care much for polymer (plastic) or cast (pot metal) guns. This will be a decent addition to the collection.

I will definitely have to get one of the .45ACP models when they come out.

I've never been big on the .40 caliber. The ammo is very expensive relative to other calibers and how much better can it be than a .38 special?

I have a P-01 and a Witness Match in .45. I plan to buy an AR-24 15c (Tactical) this spring or summer.

I love the P-01 and I REALLY love the Match. But I also really like what I've heard and read about the AR plus I think it's a great looking pistol.

Armalite AR24

I got one. I hate it. The back adjustable sucks. The gun sucks. I encourage you not to waste your money and buy one. You might as well buy a CZ or Witness. A more better deal.:banghead:

CZ clones are great.
They compliment an already growing CZ collection, or in other cases..

Owners are so impressed with the wonderful CZ75 design that that buy
a real-deal CZ.

I'd like to have the Compact version myself.

Have handled the full sized gun at a Gun Show and really liked it, but feel that
it would be too heavy for me to carry.

Same with the full-sized CZs, too.
