This article from Fox (fair and balanced) explains it all. Did Karl Rove tell Fox to play the racism card?

Armed Civilians Converge Upon Mexican Border
Saturday, April 02, 2005

TOMBSTONE, Ariz. — They call themselves patriots, but critics call them everything from gun-toting rednecks to racists.

Hundreds of people were converging on Arizona's Mexican border Friday to ready for a month-long campaign to urge federal lawmakers to do more to stem illegal immigration (search).

The events have been organized by the Minuteman Project (search), a group that organizes volunteer civilian patrols on the Arizona/Mexico border to report illegal immigrant crossings to the U.S. Border Patrol (search).

Participants on Friday were rallying in Tombstone, Ariz., and taking part in an orientation.

Rallies and protests were planned throughout the weekend to call for stricter border enforcement.

About 1,200 people, mainly from the Southwest, were expected to attend events including stationing people along the border 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the next 30 days in a type of massive neighborhood-watch program.

The protesters say they're fed up with Washington's inability and/or reluctance to clamp down on illegal immigration, and they're upset with Mexico for encouraging its citizens to break U.S. laws and exporting its unemployment problems.

Polls show that upward of 90 percent of Americans favor a clampdown, but the project is controversial nonetheless. Minuteman volunteers consider themselves patriots, much like the minutemen during the American Revolution.

President Bush, during a recent meeting with Mexican President Vicente Fox (search), denounced such "vigilantes."

"I'm against vigilantes in the United States of America and for enforcing law in a rational way," Bush said.

Armando Navarro, a University of California-Riverside political science professor and coordinator of the National Alliance for Human Rights (search), made up mostly of Hispanic activists, had some harsher words for the Minutemen.

"They have advertised nationally for volunteers to come in and enjoy the climate in the hunt against Mexicans. Literally, that's the language that they have used to promote their nativist, racist politics," Navarro charged.

But James Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project, said he's no racist.

"My son is Mexican. My grandson is Mexican. I've never been affiliated with any racist type of group," he said. "We're not going down there to hunt Mexicans, we're going down there to bring national awareness to the fact we have porous borders that are grossly unprotected."

i have been telling Republican fund raisers both on the phone and by mail,to get a tin cup go to the border and take a collection from their undocumented workers, and that Vincente Fox can get them a good exchange rate on the peso.it may be that the Republicans need a new slate of candidates.

I've seen this same article at different websites. I'm not sure it was written by fox. It may have been something they got from another source and published.

The articles I've seen are

CNN - Volunteers to patrol Arizona-Mexico border - no mention of racism.
MSNBC - no coverage that I can find.
ABC - Volunteers to patrol Arizona-Mexico border - again, no mention of racism.

Fox is the ONLY national source I can find that is playing the race card.

Where do people get the idea that Fox played the Race Card?

Because they reported what Armando Navarro said?

"They have advertised nationally for volunteers to come in and enjoy the climate in the hunt against Mexicans. Literally, that's the language that they have used to promote their nativist, racist politics," Navarro charged.
Maybe Carl Rove told Navarro what to say?

Should they only report what you want to hear?

Fox is using the old technique of raising an allegation, without appearing to do so directly, by ascribing it to others, or giving prominant coverage to those extremists who believe the allegation to be true.

Fox is playing the race card here, and I wouldn't doubt that there is some influence from the Bush Admin. in this.

TOMBSTONE, Ariz. — They call themselves patriots, but critics call them everything from gun-toting rednecks to racists.

And many critics consider Bush to be a boot licking toady to the Mexicans, and are concerned that there may be some undue influence by the Mexicans on the Bush Admin. Is Fox going to report those allegations as well. It would seem to be the 'Fair and Balancedâ„¢' thing to do.

Fox is doing more than just quoting Navarro in the story; on their front page the link to the story is

Armed Civilians Guarding Border. Critics fear unleashing gun-toting racist Americans on Mexico border

A country has not only the right but the responsibility to control it's borders !!! That the politicians refuse to do it proves that their interests are not in protecting this country !

If an article about the million man march contained a quote from a KKK member would they just be reporting what he said? like Cool Hand Luke said, they found somebody who would say what they wanted said so they didn't have to take credit for it. Their headline proves that.

The headline on the website is pretty inflammatory I have to admit.

The story however (without the headline as was printed here), should give both sides, which it does. If they only gave one side they'd be shilling for the Minuteman Project.

Now you know the real person you put into office, and your "trusted" news source is no more honest than any other mass media network.

I really hope that the Minute Men can get something accomplished. I don't know how likely it is, but maybe a candidate or candidates will come up that will make an issue of this in the next elections for president and congress. Just bringing it to national attention has brought a great deal of talk and debate. We have a serious problem with illegal aliens coming to this country with a total disrepect of our laws, after all that is how they get here in the first place right? By breaking our laws.

Maybe it's time to start voting for someone else...

And who exactly would that be? The Democrats are just as bad if not worse on border security issues and the Libertarians are the worst of all with their ridiculous open border policy. I'm getting sick of ALL the political parties.

Perhaps someone of the likes of Pat Buchannan, or another Paleo-Conservative? They don't like this open border situation at all.

I have to defend FOX news as OVERALL being the most balanced news network. Yes they have their wackos, but they tend to be rather evenly spaced between left and right. This instance is one of those wackos.

It is time to start banging on the RINOs (Republican in Name Only). Unless they are willing to be truly conservative, they need to be replaced.

I agree. I see this kind of thing every time (with a Democrat bias) I go to CNN.com or CBS, which is less and less often

Maybe it is time to start voting for someone else:

Michael Peruka--Constitution Party

God-Family-Republic

The Constitution Party would interest me more, but it smells a little of theocracy.

I am a Libertarian Party member, but the "Open Borders" issue is nonsense -- political purity triumphing over practicality.
