The problem is that the Border Patrol is working against the Minuteman Project, not with it. Dd

Border Patrol Complains About Volunteers

TOMBSTONE, Ariz. (AP) - Volunteers who have converged on the Mexican border to watch for illegal immigrants are disrupting U.S. Border Patrol operations by unwittingly tripping sensors that alert agents to possible intruders, an agency spokesman complained Monday.

Scores of participants in the Minuteman Project began assembling late last week and planned to begin regular patrols on Monday, in an exercise some law enforcement authorities and civil rights groups fear will result in vigilante violence. Many of the volunteers were recruited over the Internet, and some planned to be armed.

Over the past few days, they have set off sensors, forcing agents to respond to false alarms, said Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Jose Maheda.

``Every sensor has to be addressed,'' Maheda said. ``It's taken away from our normal operations.''

The volunteers planned to start fanning out Monday across 23 miles of the San Pedro Valley to watch the border and report any illegal activity to federal agents.

The idea, according to project organizers, is partly to draw attention to problems on the Arizona-Mexico border, considered the most porous stretch of the 2,000-mile southern border. Of the 1.1 million illegal immigrants caught by the Border Patrol last year, 51 percent crossed into the country at the Arizona border.

Jim Coniglio of Tucson, who plans to patrol with other volunteers this week, said residents in some areas of the border have complained of being ``overrun routinely'' by migrants. ``They're feeling insecure,'' he said.

The Border Patrol opposes the operation. ``The possibility for something going drastically wrong is very high,'' Maheda said.

" the possibility for something going drastically wrong is very high" ....yeah, like already letting 11 million illegals enter the country !!

No mention of the fact

that the MM already alerted the border patrol to a group crossing the border resulting in 18 arrests? The media must have missed that one! :barf:

Yeah, like they go running out every time a sensor trips....if they did that, they'd have caught a lot more illegals.

Incidentally, one of the washington papers above the fold cover stories was that the MMP rescued a lost and sick illegal.

If private citizens show them up, their budget is in jeopardy. Of course they are going to gripe!

I have paid very close attention to the reporting of the Minuteman Project, and I am disgusted. Both the left and the right have spun this out of all proportion with reality. The examples cited above are correct: no mention of sick illegal alien being helped by MM, repeated use of "vigilante" where none exists, and now the BP is whining about "sensors" being tripped. Give me a break!!! With that logic we should ban hiking!

I listened to Ed Schultz today on the radio. He had NM Senator Bingaman on who repeatedly said (paraphrasing), "They shouldn't be out there with guns and enforcing the law. That is the Government's job. They should just report to the Border Patrol and let them arrest illegals."

1) It IS the governments job. Why aren't they doing it?
2) No mention from anyone that just reporting, not arresting, is what the MM are doing!

How do such uninformed idiots get elected?!?

...or is it a deliberate lie?

:cuss:

The L A times had a great article today about how the mexican police are pasing out warning to citzens not to try to cross because they may be beaten or shot . I think its going to be slow month for the coyotes.
maybe someone that know how can link it?

And the sensors were working SO well. What's the illegal count now....11,000,000 or so?

GOOD!! it's about damn time the mexican government do something (even if it's that small and they're forced into it) to discourage their citizens from breaking our laws.

The left is gonna complain no matter what.
The BP is going to complain because it makes them look bad.

Either is great simply because it shows how ignorant and ineffective the present policy is.

As for Sen Binghaman, you might call him the candidate from LaRaza Socialista. Total P'head when it comes to anything of substance. Half the state would burn down if he had his way. Does not answer his mail either.

As for enforcement of the laws being the business of government?
WRONG. The citizens loan it to the cops. That power belongs to the people and don't you believe any claptrap otherwise.

The BP spemds not much time on the border and plenty running their "checkpoints" that impede the activity of Joe Citizen, more in the name of drug enforcement than anything else.

Strictly speaking, you are correct. I was trying to illustrate the self-contradiction of the Senator's statement.

``Every sensor has to be addressed,'' Maheda said. ``It's taken away from our normal operations.''
What 'normal operations'? Letting millions cross the border illegally, then remain in the country to tap social services? Those 'normal operations?

No offense taken flechette.
Every time I hear that $#@!& name I get PO'ed.

I'm sitting on a $500 check for whoever runs against him next round.
Big looser.

Border Patrol is just trying to do whatever they can to save face in all of this. It reflects badly on them that civilians are willing and concerned enough to go to the border. I also hate the way the media is portraying the MMs as out there with guns detaining people. All they are doing in observing and reporting. I hope they don't end up having to defend themselves against anything.

C'mon...what do you think?

BP guy on the news last night was whining about "normally we catch 20-30 illegals a day here [yeah, right] but today we haven't caught any!" Well DUH! Seems like MM have stemmed the tide, huh?

Of course the Border Patrol is b****ing and moaning. The average Jon & Jan Q. Private-Citizen of The Minutemen Project has shown just how poorly the BP is perfoming, and how little the Fed.Guv really cares about illegals.

I am not sure if this is the one you are thinking about, but it nicely illustrates the point I believe you are making.

This one is cute as well... Jim Gilchrist, the cigarette smoking bad-ass who is manipulating the media...

Isn't Arizona still part of the United States? Everyone down there has a right to enjoy the desert, bring binocs, view the scenery. If they happen to observe a few hundred illegal border crossings...So?

Yes, I am being facetious, but only to a point. I cannot grasp the outrage and disappointment that Mexican nationals appear to feel when the sovereign United States tries (albeit half-assedly) to secure its border. Uh...Excuse me? Exactly what is this ENTITLEMENT you feel you deserve??? Explain that one again, please?

The MM project is basically a large community watch program.

I can understand some frustration by the border patrol in relation to the sensors.

The border patrol is under funded and under manned, and chasing false alarms has to be frustrating.

I suspect there are some border patrol agents that are very grateful for the help, whole others are very upset about the MM project.

The media tends to be selective in who they interview and who's opinions they report.

I haven't been following the actual media coverage of this, and I have a question. If there are reports that members of the Minutemen are showing up armed, are there any video clips showing that this is indeed the case? If there isn't, we should be hitting all of the Mainstream Media outlets who are reporting armed Minutemen and asking them for the proof. Otherwise they are just "Rathering" their readers.
