I was driving down the Interstate tonight. Off on the shoulder were two people in dark clothes, carrying a tire. They were very hard to see.

I pulled over and gave them a lift. It was a father and son, and they had had a flat coming home from the boy's football game. They did not know where they were, so instead of walking back about a mile to the town behind them, they had gotten a lift about five miles ahead, and then they were trying to walk the five miles back to their van.

It was cold tonight. It is supposed to get down in the 30's (F). I assume if the boy had just played a football game, he was probably fatigued. I gave them a quick lift. It was on my way. It saved them hours. The boy will get home tonight in time to go to school tomorrow. They got off the shoulder faster so they are less likely to get killed in traffic.

If I had not been CCWing, I would not have stopped to get them.

Concealed carry makes the world a better place.

jeffmack,

That was a very nice thing you did for 2 complete strangers. I have done the same for people, and like you I would not stop if I hadn't been armed.

About 10 days ago I stopped and helped an elderly couple about 4 miles north of Searchlight, NV, they were in a real bind and I was able to help them. Never occured to me to think about being armed when I stopped, I just stopped. Maybe I am not paranoid enough, do I need to go get fitted for a tinfoil hat?

i'm with jeffmack and starshooter. i help, but i only feel safe helping when i am armed. i've also been on the receiving end of help. a man named bruce pulled over his truck one time and helped me with a flat (i was driving my sister's car and she didn't have a jack!). i offered to buy him a beer at the next town (7 miles away) and he said no thanks, just promise him i'd never leave anyone stranded on the side of the road. since then i always help if it doesn't look like they got it under control. but yes, carrying does make it easier. if carrying makes more people comfortable in giving assistance, then yes, carrying does make the world a better place.

I believe that generally speaking an armed society is a polite society. I know that I always try to be polite and cordial to strangers just in case.

These days and in my area, stopping for a stranger while you're unarmed is a bad idea. I like being a nice guy, but I'd also like to leave with my car and wallet and breathing. When I have a gun nearby, I feel safe enough that I'm much more likely to take the chance.

What I've done is made a little kit. Some bargain-bin jumper cables with the instruction card, a tire plug kit and can of generic fix-a-flat, a pair of 50-cent adjustable wrenches, roll of electrical tape, and some change for a payphone. I just give this to people that need a jump or flat repair.

There's a list of what's in it on the cable's instruction card, with a request to use what they need, replace what they've used up, and hand the kit off to the next person they see broken down.
