Armor plate meets 50 BMG AP ammo... pics!

sorry for the necro post.

Have some more pictures that some may like to see.

12x12 inch steel plate 1 1/4 inches thick shot at 150 to 200 yards.

Has absorbed around 40 hits at most, of all those shots only 4 have completely penetrated. Some of the complete penetrations occured when the plate was still nice and clean, others occured later when the plate was quite a mess. It's really chewed to heck now.

Plate is not hardened steel but it isn't the most mild of steels either. 5.56x45mm at 100 yards leaves a crater about 3/16x3/16, 300WinMag 190s at 100 yards leave a hole you can work your index finger into deep enough your finger nail disappears.

163grn AP reloads in the 300WinMag :) Well, those almost make it completely through at 3200fps 100 yards away, of 20 shots I have had only 1 shot make it completely through.

Front side, smaller craters are from 5.56 at longer ranges. Hole is ofcourse from 50BMG.

Old picture of the plate before it got spanked by the 50.

Smallest craters towards right side are 5.56, larger craters towards top edge are 300WinMag, and the other shots were my starting load with 163s. 3rd load over starting put one hole completely through, was careful loading up due to the 163s having more bearing surface than a 180grn Sierra MatchKing.

Few months back somebody on Biggerhammer did an analysis of the 50BMG AP cores and found they didn't have much if any tungsten in their alloy, wound up being something like 98% steel. Just VERY hard steel.

I've got a core sitting here at home that has survived a direct head on shot with a large boulder and it is still sharp. Carved about a fist sized hole in the boulder and the core was found sitting about 1 foot in front of the boulder. If shooting into rock can't get these things to deform I don't know what will.

Though I have seen fragmented/broken AP cores lodged in my steel plate so they might be brittle in some respects.

Blast from the past! I always like looking at old pics that remind me of going out shooting.

Uglygun,
What are you doing in May? Specifically the 19th-21st?

cool

it must have taken a while to get 200 pounds of steel down range:D

Depleted Uranium!

why mess around with little kiddie Steel core AP rounds when you could shoot Depleted Uranium!

I was reading about that stuff its badass! :D

Kinda a noob question since I am not a steel expert, but how tough is this A2 stuff compared to the discarded tie plates you find near railroad tracks? My grandparents live next to some tracks so we walk them and bring home a couple plates every now and then. We have one hanging on his rifle range. Because it is free to swing, it lasts hundreds of rounds and has never been penetrated, even though it typically sees magnum hunting rounds up to .338 Ultra Mag.

Nice pics. My brother is hoping to have a .50 by his midtour for us to play around with.

Great thread... I'd hate to be the one to wear a 1.5" thick plate too! :)

My vest is good to .308 levels...and we tested it out on a sample vest, and had good results with it stopping the ammo.

That's way too far down the road for me to know for sure.

I've got vacation time coming up and a friend and I are planning two camping trips for late Feb or early March, going up to Carrizo Plains for a couple days to turn the long range rifles loose and get away from it all.

I need to finally grab some Amaxes and load them up.
