New to AR's, anyone have experience with the 7.62x39 set ups? Looking at a Bushmaster 308 A2 any comments that would inlighten me here? 7.62x39 question do to having crates of the stuff, SKS/AK's just don't get it done for me. CETME 308 is OK, but AR looks more American, heh? Bushmaster A2 5.56 is great so far, love it.

The problem with 7.62 AR's is the mags. The round does not work well in the AR15's magazine and the standard ones only hold 5 rounds at least the reliable mags. There are franken mags (AR15 mags welded to AK mags) I have seen them but I am not sure how they work. I would much perfer to keep the AR15 in 223 or if you must have more power get the 6.8. Personally If you need more power than the 223 I think you should step up to the 308 in an AR10 or M1a or FAL which ever suites you the best.

Two very different rounds, the former being quite inferior. THe Bushy .308 shoots .308 win (7.62x51mm). Of course, you will spend 10 times as much on .308 as 7.62x39. But it's worth it, IMO. I have 2 .308 autoloaders (an Armalite AR10A2 carbine and a Century G-3) and I thoroughly enjoy both. I also have a Mini-14 for cheaper plinking. No commie stuff in my collection.

If you want to shoot 7.62x39 in an American gun, buy a Ruger mini-30.

Actually, the MWG 7.62x39 magazines for the AR work quite well. They are capacity-challenged (5- or 10-round) but they have been flawless for me. DPMS and others sell the FrankenMags and by all reports they work well. While they cost more than USGI 556NATO mags, they're certainly no more expensive than the PRI 6.8SPC magazines... For hunting and slow-fire range use, I have been using the Colt post-ban 9-round 556NATO magazines loaded with four rounds of 7.62x39. That 4+1 setup has proven quite reliable and is adequate for what I'm doing.

I built my first AR as a 7.62x39 simply because I wanted something that I could hunt medium game with, something that I could afford to feed, and something for which I could find lots of choices in factory ammo. Now that the 6.8 brass seems to be getting more prevelant, it's my next project. But the 7.62x39 is a very do-able chambering in the AR platform...

Oh, by the way - as much as I love my SKS's, my AR in 7.62x39 is simply a more accurate rifle....

I have a Bushmaster AR-10, sweet rifle! That it uses standard FAL mags is a great plus for it. I have the flat top version topped with a Leupold VX-III LR scope in 6.5-20. It's one of my favorite rifles, very acurate for a semi-auto. It was a pricey setup but once the sticker shock ended I was very happy with it.

Thanks for the replies. Understand the difference between 7.62x39 and 7.62x51. Want a reliable X39 if they would function, mag's were a real puzzler. Will have the Bushmaster BCWA2 L 20IZ soon, but was really no sound info available close by that I'm tuned into. Armalites mag's are modified M-14 's and very expensive. FAL's are more plentiful, if reliable, that's why was leaning to BMstr.

My advice is to stick with the round that the weapon was designed around. If you want a 7.62x39 get an SKS or an AK. If you want a 7.62x51 then my choice would be the FAL but I'd be perfectly happy with an M1A or M1 too.
