reading thru back issues of guns & ammo, i was piqued by some info on long distance shooting...it was 10-15 shots within 10" at 1000-yds. now, i must say that i don't like shooting rifles. i only now have a Marlin 336 but have shot a few other rifles/shotguns...i am not able to shoot rifles for a respectable group at distances. nor, do i care to put the effort to do so.i prefer handguns, but respect those that specialize in this area..now, my question of interest is the following: Who amongst Y'all have ever personally shot/ not witnessed a group at 1000-yards of 12" or less...what rifle did you use? what was the chambering? used factory or handload? what were the circumnstances? other equipment used; scope, etc..? was it in competition or was it informal ? what helps you with your concentration? and what was your level of experience when you first succeded? any other relevant info of interest personal/technical appreciated? pics are appreciated... finally, if someone in Hpouston/san ANTO NIO/aUSTIN area is able to do such a feat. i would be honored to witness the experience...within my means, i would invite you to an afterwards treat...

Here is the general ranges and targets used at one match I know of.

Hunter class: Factory thin contour barrels, hunting style stocks (no prone match rifles!) Bipods OK, no rear bags. No target knobs on scopes - your usual hunter setup applies here. Two boxes of ammo will be needed (40 rds.) Distances will be a range of close and medium shots. These will be fun for both beginner hunters and experienced folks too. Rangefinders OK - although we may limit your possible ranging methods for certain stations (mil or swag). Most targets about 2 moa with a max range of about 500 yds.

Precision class: Anything goes subject to the caliber limitations so our steel doesn’t get holes punched in it. You must be able to transport your equipment by yourself. Three boxes of ammo will be needed (60 rds). Distances will be a wide range. There will be unknown distances - possibly different ranging methods too - so come prepared. Most targets 2 moa down to 1/2 moa at times. Ranges to 1200 yds. The 1200 yard targets are large, don't worry. Rangefinders OK, although you may have to mil or swag some target ranges to keep it "interesting."

The guy that won the last match, Joe Starns, used a 300 WinMag. He builds guns, and is a heck of a good guy. He has a shop in Conrad, MT.

Bob,

yes, i was reading about some exceptional people that have done just such a thing. as i know how dificult it is for me to be accurate at distances with a rifle, i can appreciate both the equipment, training and person that is not only able to do but do so more than once...that said, i know i could find a site that can informe me on the above, but as i only belong to THR and given that it takes an exceptional person equipped with the right tools/training/experience. etc...i figured that there might be at least one if not more THR members that could share their experiences...either through personal anecdote/ pics...have you shot such group? so far, i've just read about it being done, i'd like to be fortunate to say, i've seeint with my own eyes...a rare and worthy experience to me that would be...anyone?:D

rimmer,

Hammer...time!! thank you, sir... for the link. now, if anyone from Texas know where to go for some activity like this. thank for the fast info...i am excited to begin my new learning experience. time to Google-Fu out-of-here...:D

Do a Google for "1000 yd benchrest shoot" and you can find a Texas range.

Be ready for some stiff competition though. Here's a 10 shot group that finished 8th.
