Went to the range this morning with the wife. We were just going to do some pistol shooting and maybe shoot the 22lr ARs. After a couple of hours we went inside to get a Brownie and something to drink. There was a discussion going on about the pending magazine ban or the weapon ban that many feel will try and be passed this year or right after the election.

I listened for a while as I enjoyed my brownie and was looking at some of the weapons my FLL had for sale. There was a rather dark wooded something in the corner of one of the gun cabinets so I picked it up to get a better look. As I looked down I noticed a Russian star so I looked a little harder ( got the reading glasses and everything) and all the numbers matched. The FLL is a friend of mine and I mentioned to him that he does not like an SKSs so what was he doing with this one? He had taken it in on trade and was looking to sell it to me just to make the prior trade work out. The bore was perfect and when I tore the weapon down for inspection the BGC looked brand new as well as the bayonet still had the green cosmoline tent to it.

I had not taken a 7.62x39 anything with me but not a problem in that if you want to buy something he always gives you 5 rounds to shoot and see if you really do want what he has for sale.

I put the rifle back together and asked for 5 rounds....It was funny because he knows I have a couple of other SKSs and I had already shot my mouth off about not needed any more guns.... To be honest I like the way they shoot but at my age and eye sight I know it will not be much longer for me to continue using iron sights.

Took my 5 rounds and went back outside to the range. Set the blade sight to the last click or all the way down and fired two shots at a 30 yard target. First round was 1/2" low and 1/4" left; next shot was dead center but still 1/2 low. With my remaining three rounds I shot at some hanging steel targets at 327 yards. First shot was just over my target because ( good pratical excuse) I usually shoot 154 grain pills (which are like throwing rocks) and these were 123?? or something much less...I should have looked but I didn't. So for my next two shots I just aimed at what I thought was half way between the top and the center of the target and "Boom, Boom" got two hits.

I really wanted to cuss my FLL because I darn sure do not need another anything but "man Oh man how could I pass a Russian SKS that has been waiting for me to show up"? I think it was only shot a few times by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov's wife on Sunday or something. I do not even have to adjust the front sight.....

I ran some Gunslick foaming bore cleaner through it when I got home and the cleaner never turned blue ... the bore and rifling are pristine....Amazing!

Yeah, those com-bloc guns are right bastards.
Just when you think you've got enough and your all done.....
Hey, look at me! You don't own one made (insert country/factory, etc.)
:D
cheers, and hoping you buy four more!

I have a similiar story. I went to the gun shop to buy a shotgun and came home with a pristine Yugo SKS for $80 below the going rate. Was very suprised to see the gun there as this gunshop is not know for selling older military weapons. Life is good :D

Sounds like a nice one, where's the pics!

We have a couple of small 10 or 12 megapixel cameras we use when out and about and of course the camera in the phone but even if I did all that I still would not know how to post a pic here!! Maybe one day I will get motivated and try a few pics. I do have 3 of the nicest SKSs I have seen except for some brand new we found back in 69; was a time and a land far far away.

The FLL bud did have a walnut SKS stock he wanted to sell me for the rifle however I actually like the dark wood and think it is nice having all the numbers match. The original wood has very few bruise or scuff marks and you have to look to find those. I have not shot the other 2 SKSs in over a year so I suppose this one will also be relegated to safe duty. Pig popping I use an AR in 5.56 or 7.62x39..

I really should take some good ammo and see what kind of MOA on paper I can get but alas, I am more of a hunter who is happy and mostly confident I can hit the game when the time comes to pull the trigger.

Stuff like this original SKS gives me the warm fuzzes and who knows maybe in the year 2525 the SKSs will be worth more than I paid for them. Joke; this one was not a steal of a deal but I certainly did not get ripped off either (or so I tell myself) it was not the $89 wonder toy but a fair deal none the less.

Anyway I am glad I found the rifle even though like I said before, "I did not need another weapon".

Don't forget, the one who dies with the most guns wins.:)

Good deal on the find.

If you have an SKS or two you want to get rid of you're more than welcome to send one my way.

Ya know it is funny how some guys knock the SKSs yet when some of my lessor blessed friends hold one or shoot it they mostly ask if I want to sell one to them. A couple of guys who carry some very expensive rigs have even broke down and smiled after shooting one.

I do appreciate the consideration though. If I end up moving overseas (permanently) then I will be having a liquidation sale on everything; gonna be hard to do for me.

Pictures, or it never happened.

I found very recently explaining to a friend (convincing myself?) why it was that I had 3 SKSs and why only one gets shot:

One is a straight up "bring back" Chinese which has great sentimental value but is ugly as frozen snot, shoots poorly and has a trigger like the PTO on a Massey Ferguson. No shootee, just lookee.

One is a drop dead beautiful (yes, an SKS can - in my opinion - be beautiful) Russian parade grade knockout. Here, look but don't shoot and feel what an SKS trigger can really feel like when someone cares.

The other is an un-rebuilt Russian. Looks OK, shoots quite well and I don't mind some honest sign of use.

Now.... About those Yugos I've been ignoring...

I understand: I think one of mine was a Chinese parade, look pretty for the camera and fearless leader kind of SKS.

I wish I were younger and the eye sight was still there; I really would do some serious pig popping with mine but I am kinda relegated to using optics with these eyes now.

I figure it this way. Anytime I am out and about be it gun show, the ranges I shoot at or wherever including yard sales to a church if the right gun pops up for the right price I buy it most of the time. Matters not if I already have one of whatever it might be. If one of a specific gun I have is good then two of the same gun must be better. :)

This is especially true when the price is right.

Ron

Not only that but it's more than twice as good. :D You get to have backup parts for that "just in case" situation that we all worry about. That's why I have two SKS's. I have two shotguns that are alike plus another one that will interchange parts with the two. That's the only multiple guns I have and no surprise they are the most important guns I have the way I see things. They will get the job done of HD which is the primary function for a gun. I also like having a take along gun in the form of a handgun since that's the only legal to carry loaded style of gun in my state. I don't have matching guns but I have enough of them to make sure one is going to be working pretty much all of the time. I'd be really surprised if all 5 quit at the same time.

Backups are a way of life for guns IMO. They're too important to risk being out of the one you need.

Sky: The guy I just worked with for four days is selling his AR-15 plus ammo somewhere in the n.w. Atlanta area.

He will replace it with a Norinco SKS, and has a variety of critical supplies (water filter etc), just in case his family ever needs to live a few weeks at home under "austere conditions".

I hated 4 day trips!! You should have more seniority that that!!

Man let us hope none of that stuff becomes necessary; BTW the new Red Dawn movie has finally finished having the BG Chinese replaced by BG North Koreans and should be released soon. I saw a trailer with what looked like an EMP going off and then North Korean troop transport and paratroopers hitting our heroes local town. That would be one heck of a logistical assault; the first one was weak
as this one appears to be more of the same but I will probably see it; I like when we win.

I have really never had any problems with my ARs except an occasional FTF due to a mag going south and that seems to have been mostly in the old days. I remember the last time one failed to go boom; I had not chambered a round...getting old or senile sucks!~ ...The SKSs have never failed to go boom but I have only shot one round of sks per ??100s?? in the ARs so not fair..(most of my 7.62x39 is shot out of an AR) ....also just a thought but, if you were freezing to death with no wood I guess you could make a fire out of the SKS stock; sacrilege?? Try that with an AR and see how far you get; maybe he has a point!!!hahahahah

When did somebody decide it was a good idea to remake Red Dawn? That's depressing, it'll be stupid. Just like Total Recall. Wish I could totally recall my ticket money...

You Sir are not the only one who has said that! Dunno have not seen it myself and will probably wait for it's showing on cable.

Where is the cheap brass Yugo ammo that used to be everywhere an was very accurate? Seems the supply has dried up; glad I bought some before it disappeared.

I am 26. I came in when Yugos were 200$ for an unissued one covered in cosmoline. I sold mine that same year because taking my gun collection from Texas to Alaska didnt make sense. Boy that hindsight sure is 20/20!

Now its 2012. Guess what im looking/wanting to buy? An ak or an sks. The more I think about it, the more i lean to an sks.

I live in Alaska. In a town that doesnt have gun shows. In a town that has one gun store. They can pretty much charge whatever they want. Wish I was a little older so i could have been able to really take advantage of the Milsurps.

Closest thing I see nowadays are what appears to be pretty rough norinco sks's for 235$. I just may have to roll the dice on one. The gunshop here wants 400+ for them! :(

Edit: Whoops. Did not see how old this thread was. Sorry!

Hahahaha old guns old thread so what!!! Wow sorry it is so hard to get a deal there.

For those who are tired of buying expensive 5.56 ammo, theres Golden Bear for $219 at SGammo for a 1000 rds. SKSs and AKs , the way to go for cheap and fun shooting.
