Both officiers had to shoot the bad guy - plain and simple. Thank God only the bg died. Pray for the recovery of the innocents and the officiers.

Maybe this will be a wakeup call for more practice and possibly better ammo.

Better ammo? Don't they use Gold Dots??

This seems pretty simple to me - any private person who had done exactly what these cops did would be liable for all 9 injured bystanders. A cop has (or at least SHOULD have) the same standard of responsibility, and they should be held accountable just as anyone else would be.

They are accountable, they just aren't criminally,or civilly, liable if following departmental procedure.

They have a different level of responsibility as they don't have the same options as a private person

I don't think nine innocents wounded by LEOs in crossfire is the kind of "latitude" the citizens of NYC had in mind.

Probably not. Perhaps they will step up to demand that the police allow armed murderers to simply walk away.

No...I am sure the good citizens of NYC would not like murderers to walk freely. But I suspect they would have preferred that the police tail the suspect, who had stowed his weapon in his bag and was not an immediate threat to anyone, until they could have safely initiated the arrest with far less civilians around.

Oh enough. Thing went very wrong and bystanders were hit. There will be investigations and lawsuits. You can be sure of that. But unless you have ever been in a gun fight you have no idea how you will react. You can train and hope that it kicks in, but that is the best you can do. It is easy to point fingers and armchair something from the safety of a keyboard.
