Assume I know nothing about AR15s...

Yep, it shows under "reply" as well, but only until you hit "post reply". I searched and found the pic, copied pic location, and used it. Must have been an old one before the changes post. I didn't check the date.

I mounted it that way to give me a little room for my offset iron sights.
Ahhh. I can see that, and the second pic illustrates. At first from your comment I thought, "well wouldnt it give more room further forward?" But I see from the pic now that the bell of the objective would interfere. Good use of available rail space!

Another pic of the Nikon 3X scope mounted on an AR. Nice little scope. Good glass, not great glass, shows up in low light.

I couldnt see it either, but hitting "reply" it appears in the reply box!

Don't go under 20" if noise bothers you.
Really?
I've never heard this before.
I'd think what's on the end of the barrel would affect noise more than the length.
So please explain why I'm mistaken as I'd think a flash hider should reduce noise more than a muzzle brake.
I've also found different powders have an affect sound. Please tell me why length would have more impact than what ammo you use.

I am a SKS and K98 guy, and have totally avoided AR-15's.
Please educate me and advise as to the best "as is" (not built) dependable AR-15, for the money (cheap & working), on the market today.
I saw an ad for a Ruger AR-556 for $650.
Anything better or cheaper ? I lean more toward reliable.

I'm not familiar with the Ruger but have heard good things.
Smith and Wesson's M&P can be had for less and gets good reviews too. They typically go for less than the Ruger.
I've also seen DPMS for less but reviews seem less than the Ruger and S&W.

Personally, I'm a big fan of PSA and I'd suggest getting one of their blemished lowers for less than $150. Then pick one of their uppers. As you'll need to be able to remove the upper from the lower to field strip it, if you can do this you shouldn't be playing with an AR. I say that half in jest, but hopefully in a way that helps you understand that taking an upper off is something you'll be doing often.

Since there are so many ways you can configure your AR, I suggest starting with an inexpensive PSA combo, get familiar with the platform. Learn what you like and don't like then either modify it, or buy another, buy another upper, or put one together. All are great options, and I'll warn you ARs are addictive and putting them together is fun.

Why? Does the longer barrel produce less vibration in the buffer spring? My BREN 805 is a 16 inch tube and doesn't bother me at all. ;)
You must remember that there are a lot of AR shooters that never shot a M16A1. There are also a lot of guys that used the M16A1 that have never fired an AR15. One thing about the M16A1 that is different from A2 and ARs is the butt stock. That hard butt stock on the A1 is a contributor to the noise. The new composites used today dampen the noise from the spring.
Oh! The barrel length has nothing to do with the buffer spring noise. But what some have learned is the closer the muzzle is to your face (the shorter it is) the louder it is.

A 20" AR pretty much burns it's powder nicely. The shorter the barrel, the less time to burn the powder. so you get a bigger flash, and a bigger bang. 8" 5.56 barrels are a bit obnoxious. 18" is fine. 16" is ok, 14.5 is noticeable.

Using a compensator makes it worse.

Ah, Ok. Yeah, the noise I referred to isn't muzzle blast - that doesn't bother me. I would hazard a guess there's a whole LOT of people out there that have never seen an M16A1, much less fired one - that was simply the last one I shot, and the experience colored my perception of the entire product line for a very long time. I owned semi-auto rifle models like SKS, AK, Mini-14, vz-58 and BREN without ever touching an AR again...with no interest until now. :) Now I am interested.

I have built a PSA blem stripped lower and it worked just fine, have another in the safe.

I built both kids an AR on Anderson stripped lowers. Worked just fine.
