Hi all, first post here.

I've just turned 21 not too long ago, and have been considering getting mine, but money is tight, so it won't be happening any time too soon.

But I got to wondering, how many people get their CHL as soon as they can? I imagine a 21 year-old would get at least a few funny looks at a class. At what age did you all (that have a CCW/CHL, obviously) get your license?

First I'm sorry to hear you live somewhere that cost is a factor in self defense. Its a shame its like that for anyone, especially as those who work at low paying jobs or live in the poorer neighborhoods are more likely to be victimized. Hopefully it will be one of those things that will be worked on with ccw laws along with restrictions on places one can carry.

I was 24 when I sent in a form and my $20 for a permit.

I'm on year 2 ,so I guess I was 35? ;)

When I turned 23 we didn't have the law in place. Now the age is 21 in OK, so we have that going for us.

I have been to class & renewals w/ those who are in their 20s & early 30s. No funny looks. They got more "congratulations, glad to see you here, good that you are doing this" type thing than we who are in our 50s. My Mother is the oldest Texas CHL holder that I know personally. She is 76 & will reknew in Feb. She does get a little more attention than the young ones.
Being safe, knowledgable & proficient w/ you chosen firearm, willing to learn the academics is what impresses the instructor, not age or youth.
Get it as soon as you can. You will find the folks at the class & the instructors will be encouraging.

At one time in VA you had to have a valid reason to get one. At that time, I went before a judge who asked me why I needed it. I explained that with my business, I carried large sums of cash. He asked how much a large sum was. I replied 500 dollars or so. He asked, "You would shoot a man over 500 dollars? I replied " I'll shoot his a$$ over 5 dollars if he's robbing me"....needless to say DECLINED. Then, when Gov Allen made it flip so you could get one, I was 30 and it went right thru.

21. There was a period in my state where you could get your pistol permit at 18, but couldn't buy a handgun until you were 21. That period ended, IIRC, a month before I turned 18. I wasn't about to have that happen a second time.

21. It went something like this:

Midnight on Birthday -> Got Up -> Bought Gun -> Applied for Permit

CCW

18 - CT - Home
21 - FL - College
28 - TX - Job
30 - 38 IL &KS (None available)
38 - KS Checking the mailbox everyday

It seems like a shame to shell out hard earned dollars for something that should be free, or at least be minable. As a Vermonter I've never needed one. I did get a N.H. CCW when I was in My early forties.....Essex
