At what point do you feel that you are running low on your favorite caliber of ammo. Ok guys this is for reloaders and non reloaders alike :D. I mean is there a certain number or is it how many mags you can fill ? Please do discuss

I feel like I'm running low if I am concerned about shooting it. There is no magic number, and it depends on what caliber. I shoot a lot of 270 but have supplies to keep me in ammo for about a year. I don't shoot a ton of 44 and 150 rds has me satisfied. I guess for me, it's just that I have enough to last a year with my normal usage. On .357 I am set for a decade though and I still want more.

depends on what i am shooting. if its 22lr i feel low at about 100 rounds and if its 12 guage i probly dont have none left and buy more lol.

If I still had a .22LR rifle then I'd want about 5K rds minimum because I'd shoot it a lot. My current favorite is .223 Rem because ammo is cheaper than .30-06 but the latter is more practical here. I'll vote 1000 rds of .30-06.

I don’t really have a single favorite. It’s when 22, 38, 357, 45acp and 7.62x39 drop below a 1,000. All others about 400 or 500.

I start to get the DTs when I have under 1,000 rounds of .45 acp available. Its actually a good thing, though...when my supply gets that low I know that I've got enough empty brass to have a lot of fun in the shop assembling replacements!

Defensive or practice ammo? There is a huge performance and cost difference between the two.

Interesting question... I don't think I've ever felt like I didn't have enough. I've certainly never cancelled a range trip because I thought I was low on ammo.:scrutiny:

Its not about a certain number, its about how much you have to how much you use. I try to keep a years supply on hand.

I rarely feel that way any more. I feel like I'm running out whenever I get to the point where I'm literally about to run out of ammunition, whether on the range or in the field.

As for my personal stock of ammunition, I essentially maintain a full ammo can for each of the calibers I own. If I dip into that can, then I'll work to fill it back up. Since only a certain amount of each caliber will fit into an ammo can, the amount for each caliber varies. For my .22 WMR, that's 3,500 rounds. For my .45 acp, that's about 1,200 rounds. Don't remember all the other amounts.

I like to have 4,000 loaded rounds for my competition pistol (that's all the Lapua brass I have) in the spring and components for another 15,000. For predators and p-dog shooting I like 500 loaded of 22-250 and 500 of .204 Ruger along with enough componets for another 1000 rounds of each. I like to have 300-400 rounds of ammo for practice in my carry guns.

I picked 100 even though that isn't technically correct. I'm comfortable with having a box on hand. I'll buy more when I see a good price but I'm not into stockpiling. I'll let the store hold the inventory until I need it.

I understand the value of having a lot of rounds, however I rarely have more than 100 rounds of something unless I'm on the way to the range or I found a big box for cheap right after payday. I'm not one of those fancy folk that can afford to stockpile it.

Then again I've got what the media would consider an arsenal capable of invading half of Europe (five guns and maybe 500 rounds of ammo between calibers)...

Depends.
Under 500 rounds of .223/7.62x39 is too few. Under 1000 of .22lr or 9mm or .45 is too few. I'm always out of 12gauge slugs and buckshot... too much fun to shoot.
For hunting rifles 20 cartridges is plenty. Zero it before season then find out there's no time to actually hunt ;-)

Depends on the caliber of course but I start to worry ar:

. 22 = 1,000 rounds
. 357 = 100 rounds
9mm = 100 rounds
. 45 = 100 rounds
5.56mm = 500 round
. 308 = 100 rounds
Other Rifle = 50 rounds
12ga = 100 rounds

Now, this is where I start worrying about what I'm shooting. Ideally I'd like to have several times this much in my ammo stash.

I shoot mainly .22LR and I voted 500 because I can always get .22LR Eley at the club. There hasn't been a time since I joined in 2003 that I couldn't get .22 ammo at the club (usually several brands available: Eley, Lapua, CCI, RWS).
I like to buy 500 or 1000 at a time so that I can get same batch consistency.

Handgun: 500 but I want at about 30-50% of it SD quality rounds.
Shotgun: 100 SD rounds with 50/50 buck to slug, birdshot and hunting slug 1 box.
RF(.22lr): 500 rounds of CCI mini-mag.

Less than this and I lose sleep ;)
