.22lr since its my main training platform following injury. I can only shoot a mag or a couple of cylinders of centerfire before my wrist starts causing me problems. Yes the ammo shortage has caused me to curb my shooting back to one trip a month. I have also found that all steel guns reduce my felt recoil so I have gotten rid of all but two LCRs.
I have also cut out my Magnum rifle cartridges to preserve my shoulder. So anything that kicks like a mule was traded out. Thankfully I can get anything I need for my 30-06 and 30-30 so as long as I dont pick up a 300 win mag I am good for at least a day if I have to hunt.
Only calibers I make it a point to keep ammo on hand for are 22LR, 9x19, and 12 gauge. Funny thing about 12 gauge is I always keep 00 Buck on hand, but I shoot it much less than anything else I own. I always have #8 target loads on hand though.
I voted 9 in the poll, as it's my primary interest lately.
To my way of thinking one keeps on hand ammo for all calibers for which one possesses a firearm. A gun without ammunition is just a chunk of metal. That means one stops shooting a given firearm before one runs out of that caliber ammunition.
Didn't vote, but after a bad Hurricane many many years ago, I packed 2 .50 Cal. ammo cans.
Each can has:
12 Ga. #8 & Buck
16 Ga. #8
20 Ga. #8
.22 LR
.25 Auto
.32 Auto
.380 Auto
9mm Auto
.38 Special
.45 Auto
.41 Magnum (.44 would be a better choice but I don't own one).
.30-30
.308
.30-06
.30 Carbine
.223
Those cans are full. But with either one (both would be better), I'll likely have some ammo for anything that I'm likely to be able to get my hands on. I look in and change the desiccant once a year. This ammo is considered 'untouchable'.
I'm not sure it even makes any sense at all to have these cans but I've never been sorry I packed them or that I keep them ready.
I try to keep 9mm, .40, and .45apc on hand with 20 round boxes of .223 picked up when I see it and can afford to tack a few bucks on my purchase.
I know it sounds silly, but after this last drought the polarizing .40 has become my go-to caliber. I can generally find it even when everything has been bought up and I rather like the performance.
For me stuff I would keep on hand even if it ment not going to the range with a particular caliber is stuff I'm willing to bet my security, freedoms, liberty and life on. .22lr is pretty short on that list. Primarily due to only having a revolver and one tube fed semi auto rifle chambered in it. Sure I make it a point to keep a couple bulk boxes around but I don't crap myself if I get down to just 1.
The stuff I always have probably leads into the thing that I reload and that is 12 gauge 00 buck #4 buck and slugs. I have a couple flats of birdshot and a couple boxes of turkey loads and the ability to reload the birdshot but I normally don't due to time consuming vs savings.
Worst comes to worst I will ALWAYS keep what I'd consider a good stash of 00 buck and slugs (at least a couple hundred of each at a bare minimum)
Second on importance for me would be my pistol calibers .45acp and 357 mag/38 spl. I try to keep a few boxes of good self defense loads plus a lot of ball/wadcutters for practice and if worse comes to worse defense.
I'd put 7.62x39 in there ahead of 5.56 simply because I have more weapons chambered in it than 5.56, again with 3-4 mags worth of higher quality balistic tip ammo, and a couple 50 cal cans of cheap hp and fmj.
I also keep .308 handy for heavier hitting rifle round and despite almost melting my debit card most of what I have acquired in it is premium ammo due to all the cheap stuff flying off the shelfs first.
The caliber I have the least of and shoot the least of by far is 7.62x54r. I have one mosin and despite it being a good bolt action rifle for the money it didn't do much to tickle my fancy and I shoot it maybe once a year at most. That being said I still am sure to keep at least 50 rds fmj and 50 soft point rounds in a can so that I'll have it if I ever need it.
I'm sure my stock of ammo is small compared to many peoples but I don't normally have tons of money to spend at one time buying it by the case.
