Sorry if this has been discussed already, my search here on THR did not yield any results.

So it appears that the BATF has been trying to make a name change after the fallout from Fast and Furious and are using the moniker 'Violent Crime Bureau' on the header of it's website. Anyone else upset that as we head towards inauguration day the government is already making moves to position itself in a way to start limiting our freedoms in the name of protection from violent crime?

But who will regulate Alcohol and Tobacco? I'm pretty sure those don't fall under "violent crime".

Well... maybe alcohol.

BATFE added this little marketing slogan back in early September, without much fanfare. The bureau has been pondering changing "BATFE" to something a bit easier to enunciate, and "Violent Crime Bureau" was on the whiteboard. The moniker does not have any legal status (yet).

And, perhaps inadvertently, its a dig at their sister bureau, the FBI, the "White Collar Crime Bureau"

Last year, BATFE handled under a 100 alcohol and tobacco cases ... placing most of their efforts on the the F and E ...

wojownik,

You are correct. They started this a few months back. I see it as a calculated move by both them and the current administration to try and distance themselves from the PR nightmare that was Fast and Furious, all the while setting themselves up to look like the heroes trying to crack down on violent offenses.

That is rather disturbing. It automatically implies that they only deal in violent crime, when many of their administrative jobs simply deal with legalese. It's also too vague. Are they going to start investigating domestic abuse and bar fights?

I still think FATE would have been the best name for them. Firearms, Alcohol, Tobacco, Explosives. Well before Fast and Furious blew up in their face at least.

All That's Fun - because they have a say in it. Changing names doesn't necessarily change the philosophy.

Wish I had the contract to reprint their letterhead, envelopes and forms. ;)
That will be a taxpayer-funded gravy train.
