I have to make a business trip to Atlanta. CCW is out of the question because of airplane security hassles. Can anyone tell me the legality of pepper spray in Atlanta and Georgia generally, and what pocketknife laws pertain. (Yes, I know anything of that sort would have to go through in baggage.)

Thanks in advance.

Section 106 of the Atlanta Municipal Code places a restriction of 3" for a fixed-blade knife and 2" for a folding knife. I know someone who was recently arrested for carrying one, though he had a valid Georgia Firearms License (our "carry permit").

Granted, I routinely carry one and have never been hassled. It seems his issue was one of very selective enforcement. AFAIK, there are no restrictions on pepper spray.

Are you sure about that? Have you traveled before with your handgun? I have gone from Michigan to Florida several times and never had a problem.

I agree with Chuckulator.
I have gun/have traveled by plane to at least 2 dozen destinations on business and pleasure with no problems whatsoever.
This includes Chicago and San Francisco.
Follow the Declaration of Firearm Form regs and you will be fine.

Thanks for the replies. Two inches! I don't think I have a pocketknife with that small a blade. Are the quoted length limits for carry, or would they even apply inside luggage or a hotel room? Are double-edged boot knives legal there?

I checked Delta's baggage requirements. To my dismay they disallow pepper spray even in checked luggage. (Though I suppose one could just buy at the destination and discard before returning.) As to handgun transport, they seem to be saying that firearms have to be separately packaged -- not inside regular checked baggage--and that since they only allow each passanger ONE free checked bag, there would be an additional $25 fee each way. I'll consider it, but I think not.

Again, thanks for your input.

I have flown Delta and you are right, no pepper spray.

I think you might be misreading the pistol transport provision. You have to have the firearm in a locked container inside your luggage. The ammo has to be in a box - not loose.

That was all that I had to do. I put the box of ammo in a shoe in the luggage. Both were in the same actual piece of luggage.

You can find some pistol cases that are hardly bigger than the pistol itself and take up very little room. One even has a cable lock to loop around the bars inside the luggage.
