attaching a bipod to my AR

I have an AR-15 with the smooth aluminum free float hand guard. It has a rail on the top of the gas block, but there is nothing on the bottom. I would like to be able to attach a harris bipod to the bottom in the event of doing some different types of shooting. I guess I am just curious how you guys are attaching bipods to these without going with a quad rail style hand guard, I really am not interested in that. I won't use any of the other rails. Let me know!

We drill and tap the front of the hand guard back about 1 " and put a sling stud in place and attach the bipod to that. You don't want to mount the bipod on the gas block as it will induce stress and negate the whole concept of the FF tube.

All of mine were attached at the sling swivel. Swivel remove clip; bi-pod fits over stud and all of mine came supplied with the hardware necessary to reattach the swivel outside the bi-pod. Check installation before you buy. It will usually show how it is done. Also some of the tec guys at Optics Planet have and shoot ARs and are very good at telling you how what and where and can recommend what will work for you. I like the bi-pods on my 20" and 24" but it does add weight. So easy to attach and remove it is not a consideration for most circumstances though.

thanks guys. I saw that some attached to the swivel stud. I just wasn't sure how stable they were being attached to such a small point. It seems as lots of people use them that way and are very happy with them. I have 24" barrels so weight is not really much of an issue. I am not running around with it playing SWAT. Thanks for the info! A-shopping I will go!

The trouble is he doesn't have a sling swivel on his set up. :banghead:

They are not unstable in that they are attaching with just as much material as you would on a full blown tactical rifle. The long pads on the bottom of the Harris bipod suck up against the bottom of the tube and things get real solid in a real hurry.

Yes the swivel stud hole may need to be reamed out .002 to get the new attachment pin through existing stud hole. Never had a problem with any of my bi-pods and the attachment works good.
